Dear Readers: Blount Today to close
Blountgirl, You said 'It goes to show that the nice guys do win even when they play their cards fair.'Excuse me, but Overbey really did not play his cards fair and how can you call someone a nice guy who so boldly distorts the truth. To put it nicely. The whole smear campaign he waged about the education vote. Did you know that Senator Finney's vote was one of two methods the State of Tennessee had to make in obedience to a COURT ORDER to equalize school funding proportionately to school enrollment across the State. The first method was to RAISE TAXES STATEWIDE and distribute the money equally to unequally funded Counties. The second method was to take the existing revenue and distribute it fairly across the State{which included a pay raise for teachers}.I absolutely believe that Senator Finney needs a re-count on his Sevier County votes. I live in Sevier County and during this whole campaign I didn't talk to one person planning to vote for Overbey. Now, I know he had the Smokies Ball Park and a new development on 66 on his team, as they contributed rather largely to his campaign. Is it a coincidence that they need a favor in Nashville. I think not. He also had the very negatively newsworthy corrupt people with a bit of power in Sevier County in his corner. But the average citizen was for Finney. Finney signs in a whole lot more yards than Overbeys. Things that make you go hmmmmm.
Both my sister, mom and brother- in -law work for Parton in the school system. It was never an issue discussed at school meetings or elsewhere and Senator said he was never called or written or spoke to on the matter and if there is one thing for sure its that he listens and responds to constiuents. I know this first hand because I contacted him myself during his term. If I called -I spoke directly to him. If I emailed he returned the email. And a friend wrote a letter to him voicing concerns. She sent this letter to many legislators and he was the only that responded with genuine concern, interest and willingness to help. The others responses were form letters and not ALL legislators responded.Overbey and his supporters planned his campaign well in advance. I told you once before that National Coal gave him money long before the campaign began. I know you don't want to believe it but he has been dishonest and accepted money from people basically buying his position. And Parton hosted a big fundraiser for him in Sevier County. Since Parton is not a wealthy man. The money spent for that fundraiser is being investigated. If the taxpayers paid for it {school system}........
In this last legislative session, false accusations were made that Senator Finney voted wrong on a BEP education bill and caused funding to be transferred from Seveir County to Memphis. This in itself was a distortion of facts.Senator's Finneys' vote was a choice of TWO methods the State of Tenn must take in obedience to a COURT ORDER to equalize school funding proportional to school enrollment across the State. The first method was to raise taxes Statewide and distribute the extra revenue to unequally funded counties. The second method was to take the existing revenue and distribute it fairly across the State {Which included a pay raise for teachers}Challenger, Overbey and Sevier County School Superintendent Parton had meetings about the two choices far in advance of the Senator's vote for the second method, despite the fact that Overbey's house district never extended into Sevier County. NEITHER Overbey or Parton contacted their Senator and voiced any concern of the possible impact of either method might have on Sevier County.DID THE OVERBY - PARTON STRAGEDY BENEFIT SEVIER COUNTY? Or was it a planned political move to ambush a Senator?Published in Mountain Press Tuesday, August 5th, 2008
I didn't say that Overbey wanted drunk drivers on the road. I said "They want to serve liquor. Doug will help them. This concerns me because drunk drivers kill. " This is a fact that they want to serve liquor and Overbey will help them. Was helping them the first time they tried. Now they are supporting him. I didn't see the flyer that you said Finney compared Overby to a Nazi, but by the enormous influx of mail in my mailbox and even my email Overbey does seem to be using brainwashing techniques repeating the same words over and over. I'm sick of his mail. The Mountain Press in Sevierville has a breakdown of the donors for both candidates. Today's issue. Read it. I see some of Overbeys clearly missing."The latest campaign figures show Overbey raised $96,834 Finney only raised $16,183."It was never Finney's intention to raise large sums of money. Money is being raised with expectations instead of supporting that candidate because they believe in that candidate.A bestiality bill - really? Yeah really- unless your into that kind of sick behavior. Its to bad Tennessee or any State needs such a law. Anyone that would harm an animal will also harm children, people. Obviously it is a big problem. High Ambitions are great if your not selling out and lying to achieve your goal. I would be ashamed to compare overbey to these great men.
Boys, Boys, I'll try to address each of your worries. I'll begin with you VolGolfer1998 What are you even talking about? Drunk Drivers? Answer to this - In Sevierville The Smokies ball park and a new development on 66 wants to serve alcohol. Now we all know that when alcohol is served we have drunk drivers. The Smokies and the Developer of new building on 66 have made big campaign contributions to Overbey. You see they don't want Finney. He sure didn't help their cause last time. They want to serve liquor. Doug will help them. This concerns me because drunk drivers kill. "I've came to the conclusion that this man will do and say anything to try and win this seat he wants so badly." Yes, he has distorted the truth. And has not ran an honest campaign.GOP85 I would like to know just what Ray Finney’s legislative accomplishments are. O.K. here are a few. He was the sponsor of The victims' impact panel legislation and the Home and community based Long time care service Bill, The long term Hospice Services bill - The antifreeze bittering bill. Just to name a few - look it up guys.Boys, How can Doug call him self a man of character and compare Sen. Finney to Barack Obabma? How can he tell people flat out lies about Sen. Finney? How can he pad his pockets with money. Yes, I know for a fact National Coal has given him money. I think Doug has his eye on higher aspirations than Senator. Lord help us all.
I'm concerned that a man with a planned agenda, paid for by people paying him to do their bidding. Will become our State Senator. Based on an expensive campaign and a lot of spin. And only after a few months will people realize the mistake. When they realize that he left a house seat to further his career plans. Which I believe is his motivating factor. I've came to the conclusion that this man will do and say anything to try and win this seat that he wants so badly. Yep, lets mine our mountain tops and ruin our environment and while we at it. Whats a few drunk drivers on highway 66.
Floydthebarber, That donation info didn't come from the Finney camp. No, sir came straight from a close relative that works for National Coal and it came long before this campaign got all heated up. I know about Finney's voting record and Yep he has voted democrat but, not for the big man who fights gun-rights and is the speaker of the house. The man who sets the tone. As far as the signs go. Finney signs keep vanishing left and right. I see Overbey every where but then again he had major campaign funding for those billboards and such. The only way I'd believe that someone stole a Overbey sign from someones yard would be - If there faces were shown clear on camera and they confessed doing it. These guys sure play dirty. Do they teach that in law school?
And why would the coal company make such huge contribution to Overbey? I guess that a Senator should not do anything to help the Smoky Mountains or State in General.A bill was passed by Finney that would save thousands of lives across the State. Antifreeze is sweet and kids ingest it and people use it for suicide. Alcoholics drink it trying to get drunk when they can't find liquor. Thousands of animals ingest it. It causes an excruciatingly painful death. With a bitterant it won't be palatable to humans or animals. So the bittering law for antifreeze will save lives across the State. Not specifically for Blount or Sevier. Its a good law .
Thats right I'm going to write in a vote for both of them. Doug and Joe didn't singlehandedly get these things done. From the dailytimes.com "State Reps. Joe McCord and Doug Overbey and State Sen. Raymond Finney have pushed hard to keep the campus on the to-do list in Nashville, said Jerome Moon, Pellissippi State Foundation Board of Trustees member." As far as the kerosene tax it had to go through the general assembly Overbey didn't singlehandedly make sure it was not taxed all on his own. He was not the only sponsor either.
Well, I didn't get a mailer like that, but if you say its out there I believe it. These guys are really getting carried away. As far as name calling I guess I took this out of context. "QUIT LYING PLEASE." Its just when someone says your lying more than once in a blog. Its easy to get the impression that your being called a liar. Again, I don't doubt the flyer just haven't seen it. These guys are slinging all kinds of accusations.
Floydthebarber, You really make me laugh. You paint quite the picture with your words. I'll bet your fun to be around. You inspired me to spend some time researching some of this political stuff our candidates are slinging around. Because I'm open minded and want to know the truth. However, this is what I found on the issues I looked up.I looked up HB2293 and Overbey really did vote against raising teacher pay. I looked up HB3046 and Overbey really did co-sponser the largest tax increase in Tn. history. I looked up SB0912 amendment2 and Overbey really did vote against requiring a photo i.d to vote. I checked SB 3098 and Overbey really did vote against allowing Tennesseans to elect our own supreme court judges.Overbey has some good points he say's Finney's vote hurt Blount and Sevier Co. It hurt our feelings, but his vote didn't decide the outcome. We'd still have less money for the kids and budget deficits, the money would have still gone to Memphis. But at this point I think I'll just vote for Bishop no ones got nothing bad to say about him.
The Speaker of the House appoints committees and rules the legislative body. I cannot agree that voting for a person who opposes the second amendment, and pro life bills is strategic.
I did not say you called me a liar, only that you said I was lying. That is a verb, not a noun. Senator Finney co-sponsered a bill to rescind [revoke] the law which granted driving privileges for illegal aliens {SB0886, March 2007} As for HB 1827 - Senator Finney was one of its sponsors in the Senate.HB1827 / *SB1968Who said that Overbey supports allowing illegals to drive and harm our children?Again, I'm impressed by your fortitude. And enjoy a healthy debate.
AlcoaGuy0157, I applaud you for being so politically motivated at such a young age. I'm sure your parents are rightly proud of you. It looks like they have been a wonderful example for you in all their volunteer work. I'm sure your parents are wonderful people. I certainly don't need to see any copy/paste of their charity work. I'm only interested in the candidates. I may actually know your parents as I volunteer for two of the groups you named. Again, way to go! We differ on candidate choices, but I'm impressed with your dedication. Good luck in all your endeavors.
Gop85- Here is your substance link - http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?ne...His words were "mistake" sorry I thought he said "regret". So, on that note show me a publication where Overbey says he regrets or made a mistake in voting for anti- gun rights liberal Naifeh.
Volgolfer1998, This is a forum to voice opinions and show facts. If you have to resort to name calling. i.e. telling me I'm lying how can you ever expect to win a Overbey vote. This is what I found on SB3430Driver’s Licenses: http://www.theiacp.org/leg_policy/Leg...SB 3430 will prohibit illegal immigrants from getting a regular driver's license. The bill will set up two classes of driver's documents. The standard driver's license would be available to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. Another, marked “NOT VALID FOR I.D.” would be given to foreign visitors on temporary visas and those who can prove their identity and Tennessee residence, to make sure they know the rules of the road. However, the “Certificate of Driving” would not allow the holder to do such things as board an airplane, buy a gun or rent a vehicle.
Volgolfer1998, Please read Amendment made to SB3098 SA-SB3098. You see the amendments are very important - just a part of it says -(B) At least six (6) of the members shall belawyers, and at least one (1) of the members appointed atlargeshall be a non-lawyerI will be looking up SB 3430 and getting back with you.Looks like I've become an unwelcome member of the Overbey fan club.
Are you for gun rights? Because Naifeh, made a personal appearance in committees to ruin any pro carry or pro Second legislation. Finney not only says he is pro carry and Second Amendment, his voting record backs it up. Why does Overbey support Naifeh? Does voting for Naifeh make Overbey incompetent. Finney admmittedly regrets his vote but I have heard no regrets from Overbey for supporting Naifeh by voting for him three times.
VolGolfer1998, No -I am NOT a lobbyist, but I met a few with good causes and a few with out. Yes, cutting and pasting is easier than typing out all the facts when there are so many! And that wasn't even all of them! Are you a member of any charitable organizations? If you are involved with your local Farm Bureau business meetings. How could you not see his involvement?
Floydthebarber,If debating an issue is throwing buffalo chips with Floyd from Mayberry then its pretty interesting. I'm not being critical of all the rah rah folks in Maryville or Sevierville. I am a member of two of the named clubs, and I hope I'm not a waste to society. What I said was "In my experience the majority did so for personal gain." I did mean the majority of the big money members and yes specifically attorneys and bankers, but not ALL of them. Being from Mayberry you surely know that there is always a few rotten apples in the barrel.I guess because I am a party to these organizations and the writer of this blog its saved me from the recipe. FYI- their are other members that feel like me. But being the Ms. Ellen of the bunch makes me a bit more vocal. Yep, that makes me a "whatever" since I'm not a Mister.Floyd, I spent a lot of time at the legislative plaza this past session watching these boys in their own element. I'm basing my decision on what I witnessed not their campaigning.Oh and be careful trimming Barney's nose hairs. He is the nervous type. Now, nose hairs makes me glad I'm not a mister.
Something of substance:* Doug Overbey voted to give power to choose State Supreme Court judges to LIBERAL special interest and deny Tennessee voters the RIGHT to elect their Supreme Court.*Voted against requiring drivers' license exams to be conducted only in the English language.* Voted THREE times for a democrat speaker of the house over republican speaker candidates - THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT VOTE A LEGISLATOR CAST.Overbey voted FOR driving privileges of illegal aliens.I could go on and on but this only allows so many words. Overbey does not seem to vote like a conservative.
I think he has made some time. As a Gideon church speaker he has certainly made a huge contribution. As well as Check this out: * Member of the Board of Directors of the Tennessee School Health Coalition, a non-profit organization which promotes healthy lifestyles in Tennessee schools. * Member of the Board of Advisors of the Men's Health Network. * Served for eight years as a member of the Board of Directors of Blount Health Educators, Inc.,a non-profit organization teaching sexual abstinence until marriage in Blount County junior and high schools (rotated off because of term limit bylaws provision). * Immediate past president (and founder) of Blount County Right to Life, a county chapter of Tennessee Right to Life. GOP85 -Yes, your first paragraph is right on - no arguments here. However, the school board members would have seen the money leave the district regardless of Finney's vote. I have three close family members who teach in the public school system and they are intelligent enough to realize that.I read the link you sent and didn't find Finney saying that the vote he regrets making has helped both counties. Perhaps I overlooked it. I am curious could you copy and paste it with leading comments to perhaps help me find it? If he said this I'm disturbed...I had the opportunity to be in Nashville at the Capital during this legislative session. So my judgment is coming from what I witnessed first hand. I witnessed Overbey and Finney in their own element. And finney stood out in all instances. But if he said that I want to know.
I'm not a Finney staff member just a supporter. I don't think that he has a staff. I realize Overbey is paying people just to put up signs for him.AlcoaGuy0157 working a 40 hour week frees you up for a lot. Being a doctor does not- unless your private practice. And did you forget continuing education requirements. This idiot knows all about CE hours because this idiot has to keep a license current. But fortunately make my own hours. The honest volunteers to Kiwanis do deserve a apology from me. I do appreciate your hard work. I'm one of you! I was speaking of the political motivated ones. I've known quite a few.
"Basic math will let you know that if you have a severe budget shortfall, raising teacher pay really will not help." Lets see Overbey voted against it because his vote wouldn't matter?six of one half a dozen of another.Never heard Finney saying that the vote he regrets making has helped both counties. Could you show me that? Finney is a man of honest integrity.
Floydthebarber, The topic here is "Tennessee Right to Life endorses Finney"So sorry Overbey did not get their endorsement. Makes you wonder why? Oh I forgot he didn't deserve it!
alcoaguy, Thanks for describing Senator Finney"A true statesman is a legislator who can stand for true conservative ideals while also working effectively with everyone in Nashville to help our state. A statesman is not someone who puts out empty conservative rhetoric then supports bills that hurt our economy and kill our education funding. It is someone who can back up what they say with bills passed helping veterans, children, the elderly and all Tennesseans." You must have written Overbey by mistake.OVERBEY HAS SHOWN HE CAN WORK WITH ANYONE JUST ASK DEMOCRATIC SPEAKER NAIFEH! HE HAS DONE HIS BIDDING FOR YEARS!
Floydthebarber are you a NRA member? Because my husband is a lifetime member and he also has served a career in law enforcement. I can assure you that the NRA is supporting Senator Finney because he is the right man to serve us as Senator. This Overby says alot but look at the facts-Overbey- co-sponsored and voted for the largest tax increase in Tn. history House Bill 3046Overbey- Voted against authorization of the State to contribute more to local school districts for the cost of teachers salaries. HB2293Does your Sis on Waldens creek know that?I could go on and on. Or you could go to the Tennessee Legislation web page and see for your self! Senator Finney is the man for the job. Don't fall for the smooth talk of an attorney. I'm sure he is a darn good attorney and I don't want to be disrespectful either. But if your going to stand back and look at the choices then check the facts yourself. Don't believe everything you hear!
In my many years of living. I have known many people in different careers. Of which the lawyer, banker friends, etc. that had self made schedules did volunteer for kiwanis, and many charitable organizations. In my experience the majority did so for personal gain. {looks pretty good on paper } for a political campaign thats always good. But the people I've known that did not make their own schedules had no time for these things. They contributed financially and would give the shirt off their back to anyone in need, but when your work day begins at 5 a.m and ends at 6 p.m. or later there is no time for pancake breakfast, serving on boards, and other of these organizations meet ups. I understand that Senator Finney was working hard at a very important job. Not paving the way for campaigning. Because he truly cares for us - not politics.
