  • Debbie and Ben Mitchell, parents of Alcoa senior Andrew Mitchell, are a mixture of excitement, hope and relief prior to the state championship game. Andrew scored what proved the winning goal in a penalty-kick shootout win over No. 1-ranked Chattanooga Christian in the state tournament opener on Friday. The Mitchells returned with their son to Blount County later that night so Andrew could be treated for a viral infection. He would miss the semifinal win over Hume-Fogg on Thursday but return to Murfreesboro on Saturday to deliver the opening goal in the championship match.
  • Jenny and Greg Baker, parents of Alcoa senior Matt Franklin, settle in for the state championship match at the Richard Siegel Soccer Complex in Murfreesboro. Franklin’s heroics in the semifinal win over Hume-Fogg proved one of the great stories of the tournament.
  • The Alcoa High School 4x200-meter relay of Brenden Rudd, Jalik Toney, Jaron Toney and Daniel Rockymore, left to right, claim their fifth-place medals. All but Jalik Toney, a senior, return for another run next season.

  • Maryville High School senior Tyler Martin clears a hurdle in the 110-meter finals. Martin would stumble clearing a hurdle early in the race, rise and sprint to a seventh-place finish. Officials, however, ruled Martin had inadvertently gone around a hurdle once back to his feet, the Rebel racer disqualified as a consequence. Pity. It was a tremendous effort.
