  • This group from Realty Executives Associates participated in an Adopt-A-Stream event on Aug. 5. The group participated in cleaning up the Pistol Creek from Pearson Springs Park to South Cedar St. Pictured are, from left, Katie Burke, Elena Monat, Dan Monat, Bertha Sanchez, David Talley, Donna Tallent, Pat McGill, and “our fish” Dominic (he really was happy to do it!).   • Andrew Herman, age 10 and a fifth grader at Maryville Intermediate School, shot an even par 36 at the recent Tennessee Golf Association Knox Junior Championship at Egwani Farms.

  • Essays written by five Heritage Middle School students were selected by Congressman John Duncan, Jr., for printing in the Congressional Record.  The students (Lindsey Basham, Garrett Headrick, Michaela Hearon, Mackenzie Kindig, Kayla Kirkland) were part of a group of 98 eighth graders and 10 teachers who were given a personal tour of the United States Capitol Building by Congressman Duncan and aide Rebecca Forster on May 5. Congressman Duncan also discussed the legislative process with the students, who later watched the voting process in the House of Representatives visitors’ gallery.
  • Several Mary Blount members greeted the arrival of the August 3, 2011 Honor Air Flight and member Brenda Sellers, who served as the guardian for two of the WWII veterans on the flight.  Mary Blount members and the Elizabeth Paxton Houston Society C.A.R. members prepared cards for these veterans for the return flight “Mail Call.”  Pictured in front are Brenda Sellers, Judy Rollins, and Brenda Holt.  In back from left to right are Debra Wilson, Pat Reilly, Charlotte Miller, WW II US Army Veteran W.H. Finger, WWII and Korea US Navy Veteran Tobe Miller,  Regent Lynda Williams, Joan Bennett, and Caroline Baxter.
  • The Townsend Riverwalk, a collaboration of the City of Townsend and the Tuckaleechee Garden Club, was certified as a Trail Arboretum by the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council recently.  Douglas Airhart from Tennessee Tech did the trail inspection of the 30 labeled trees and approved the application.  Pictured are Trail Co-chairman Florence Byrd, Forestry Council representative Douglas Airhart, and past Trail Co-chairman Elaine Russell.
  • Ruth Moore, 83, shows off her peach hibiscus plant. The plant was a gift from her grandson Anson Cable and family on Easter 2011. From April to September, it has had 255 blooms.
