  • Andrew Herman receives his winners trophy at the TGA Junior Golf Tour event held at Baneberry Country Club after shooting a 3 under par 33. Andrew Herman, 10, a student of Foothills Elementary, shot a 3 under par 33 in a Tennessee Golf Association event at Baneberry. He has tournament scores this year of 3 under at Baneberry, 2 under par 34 at Lake Haven Country Club in Athens and 1 under par 35 at Moccasin Bend in Chattanooga. Andrew also shot an even par 36 during the recent Knoxville Area TGA Tour Championship event at Egwani Farms.

  • Members of the Maryville-Alcoa Civitan Club helped to serve over 600 guests at the annual Special Olympics Hamburger Lunch Fundraiser on July 15 at First Baptist Church in Maryville. Civitan Club members are loyal supporters and volunteers at all Special Olympics activities in our community and even at the State level for skiing and ice skating at Ober Gatlinburg. Helping at the hamburger lunch are, in front from left, Suzanne Rhoden, Tammy Ferguson, Bridget Jenkins, Genny Kidd, Lynda Thurston and Anna Kay Morgan. In the back, from left, are Bob Ellsasser, Tom Begley, Deborah Quillen, Christy Walsh, Dennis Ryniec. Civitan is a worldwide, all-volunteer community service organization with a focus on serving people with developmental disabilities. The club meets at noon on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at Green Meadow Country Club. New members are always welcome.
  • Chloe Edmands, left, and Asha Green of Knoxville view the Coast Guard Cutter Ouachita during a recent visit to Fort Loudoun State Park. The Ouachita and crew, stationed in Chattanooga, periodically make trips to Knoxville surveying the navigable waterways. On their recent trip, they docked at the Park for a picnic sponsored by area Coast Guard Auxiliary units and their families.
  • The Tuckaleechee Garden Club July Yard of the Month was awarded to Kenneth and Jerilyn Myers of Townsend. The yard features dogwoods, daylilies, multiple iris, beds of pink coneflowers and gaura (whirling butterflies) and knock-out roses. In addition, a gorgeous vegetable garden is part of the landscaping and includes an asparagus bed. A swale made with hand-carried river rock borders the stone wall next to the flower beds near the driveway. The garden was selected by Tuckaleechee members Barbara Spence and Jane Caruso.   • Thirty-four rising eighth graders from Eagleton, Heritage, and Maryville Middle Schools participated in the eighth annual Youth Leadership Adventure Camp July 10-15 at Camp Wesley Woods sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Maryville. While at camp, the campers learned about various aspects of leadership and how to become better school and community leaders. With the help of Camp Wesley Woods counselors and resource staff, campers challenged themselves by rock climbing, zip-lining, hiking, and canoeing. Guest speakers, including State Sen. Doug Overbey, Brenda Sellers, Roger Murphy, Diana Lovelace (Maryville College), Tim Richardson, and Vincent Charlow discussed the importance of good leadership, character, and communication. The campers used their new leadership skills to plan service projects for their schools and community. Maryville Kiwanian Camp Director Randy Allen lauded these campers as “the best yet.”
  • The Royals from Maryville Little League went to Dandridge, TN on June 11, 2011 to play in a tournament. The girls played 5 games and all but 1 were shut outs. The pitcher Keirsten Watson had only 5 hits off of her pitching that day.
