After serving in the U.S. Army, he became involved with road races and distant bike rides to raise money and awareness for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and on to the Ironman. His name is in the lottery for the Kona, Ironman in October. The Ironman is a race of 2.5 mile ocean swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. 3,000 participants competed in this year’s race.

  • Maryville residents Stuart and Mason Trenda rang in the New Year under Atlanta’s Georgia Dome thanks to the Chick-fil-A restaurant in Alcoa. The father-son pair won the restaurant’s Bowl in the Box contest and two tickets to the Chick-fil-A Bowl in which the Virginia Tech Hokies defeated the University of Tennesse Volunteers 37-14.
  • Christiana Fe Elfstrom and Kory Anderson Jones will be married on March 5 at Everett Hills Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m. Christiana is the daughter of Matt and Karen Elfstrom of Maryville and Kory is the son of Phil and Karen Jones also of Maryville. Christiana attends Pellissippi State and teaches at Ebenezer Children’s Academy. Kory attends the University of Tennessee and works at Blount Discount Pharmacy.
  • DeAnna Lois Etchison, a sophomore at Maryville High School, celebrated her “Sweet Sixteen” birthday on Jan. 9 with a 1950s theme “Sock Hop” at Chilhowee Club, inviting a few of her close friends. In lieu of gifts, this giving individual asked for donations of non-perishable food to be given to the Second Harvest Food Bank in Knoxville. Her friends responded in such a positive way that a trunk full of food was given to those in need. DeAnna would like to challenge others to reach out to those in need and do the same this year during their personal birthday celebrations.
  • Officers from the Air National Guard 119th Command and Control Squadron present a check for $5,000 to Eddie Mannis, chairman of HonorAir Knoxville. This is the second year the Squadron selected HonorAir as the recipient of the proceeds of their annual fundraising event. HonorAir flies World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to see the World War II Memorial built in their honor. The organization will take its 7th flight in April.   • The Captain W.Y.C. Hannum UDC and the Gen. James Longstreet CofC placed at wreath at the grave of the UDC chapter’s namesake at Old Gray Cemetery in Knoxville on the occasion of his birthday, Dec. 22. Captain Hannum, a Maryville native, joined the 48th Co. B of Virginia while a cadet at the Virginia Military Institute in 1861.
