  • Henry Bonneville gets an up-close look at a snail in Cades Cove.
  • Alcoa Elementary School’s “Doing the Right Thing” Students of the Month for this year pose for a group photo. Each student was nominated by a teacher after being “caught” doing a kind deed for someone and then put into “the barrel of goodness” for the drawing each month. These kids are rewarded with a T-shirt, pizza party and a certificate.
  • 13 Domino Dames from Townsend spent a day recently doing something besides play Mexican Train, their usual passion. They went bowling in Pigeon Forge after lunch at the Old Mill. Pictured are, in back, Phyllis Vlastay, Carol Weiner, Taffy King, Jan Whitt and Barbara Leach; In the second row are Linda Gulifsen, Blanie Scroggins, Donna Pabst and Carol Short; In front are Kathy Rudd, Kay Tinsley, Lil Tiebout and Mary Dunlap.
  • Ruby Downey turned 95 on June 4, 2011. She is the mother of nine children, 20 grandchildren and several great and great-great grandchildren. She has outlived her husband, Arthur, and four of her children.

  • Members of the Lodge 6246 of Woodmen of the World stop for a photo of the Join Hands Day refurbishing of the College Hill park. They joined the College Hill Park Association Group and restored the park with new plants and also donated $500 to the park for help in its up-keep.
  • Fairpark Healthcare Center hosted and authentic Luau to honor their volunteers during National Volunteer Appreciation Week. Over eighty volunteers were in attendance, ranging in age from 10 to 90. Activities director Cheryl Murr and the staff provided original luau music along with limbo games and hula lessons for the men as part of the entertainment. Each volunteer was presented with an original coconut cup straight from the island of Oahu and Hawaiian Mauna Loa macadamia nuts. Door prizes were drawn throughout the evening before everyone had to say “Aloha.”
