Keep Blount Beautiful recently awarded Fairview School a 2010 Environmental Award for their recycling area landscaping. Students, parents and teachers all worked with Mountain Laurel Garden Club members to complete the project. Plants were chosen for the area not only to beautify, but to attract bees, butterflies and birds.   • The Mary Blount DAR of Maryville received the State First Place Award in Conservation at the State Conference due mainly to the efforts of the eleven Mary Blount members who also belong to the Tuckaleechee Garden Club in Townsend. In appreciation, the Mary Blount DAR presented Tuckaleechee President Martha Frink a check toward the purchase of a bald cypress tree for the Townsend Riverwalk.   • The classes of Everett High School had their annual Alumni celebration in June. Next year will be the 60th class reunion for the class of 1951. Plans have been made for a wonderful time to celebrate. There were 15 class members attending the alumni event from the class of 51. Pictured are, back row, Doyle Phillips, Kyle Petree, A. J.   • At the annual Memorial Day picnic held by the Captain W.Y.C. Hannum 1881 UDC at the home of Bob and Elaine Russell, new officers for 2010-2012 were installed by outgoing president Shirley Hall.   • Preston Brinkley, right, and Justin Lang pose with their trophies during the Pokemon Video Game Regional Championships in Atlanta. Preston competed and Justin went to support him. The trophies were given to Preston and Justin by their parents for being '#1 Pokemon Trainers.'
  • The Maryville Little League Senior League Softball team went undefeated in district play defeating Grainger County in the championship game on Friday, July 2 with a score of 8-2. Mikale Clendenen was the winning pitcher allowing only 3 hits and one walk with 9 strike outs.
