  • Blount County Mayor Ed Mitchell, Maryville Mayor Tom Taylor and Alcoa Mayor Don Mull present a proclamation to Mary Morse of the Tennessee Nutrition & Consumer Education Program/University of Tennessee Extension, Blount County, and Maryville City Schools Coordinated School Health coordinator and Blount BEneFITs chairperson Heather Ledbetter on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at the Blount County Courthouse. The cities of Maryville and Alcoa, along with Blount County now are proclaimed to be a “We Can!” community, which unites and promotes all of the health and wellness initiatives in Blount County. “We Can!” (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition) was developed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to help communities address the issues of overweight children.

  • Carol Scott of the Tellico Village Women’s Club presents a check to John Allen, Commander of the Tellico Lake American Legion Post, for the Horses for Heroes Program in East Tennessee. The new program provides a therapeutic riding program for service members injured in combat.  Looking on is Post Service Officer Dick Kolasheski and Lorna Kolasheski.
  • For the sixth straight year, The Kiwanis Club of Maryville has served as “bell ringers” for the Salvation Army. Thanks to the generosity of Blount County residences, the Maryville club has brought in more donations than any other participating Kiwanis club in the greater Knoxville area.
