  • While visiting Cumberland Mountain State Park this group presented former state legislator, I.V. Hillis, with an oversize gavel. Hillis was the long standing Chairman of the House Environment and Conservation Committee in Nashville.   • Townsend resident Dr. Jay Frankel received the 2010 General H.H. Arnold Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Tennessee Section, on Nov. 17 at the University of Tennessee Space Institute in Tullahoma, Tenn. The inscription of the award reads: “In recognition of his outstanding contributions toward advancing the state of the art of the aerodynamics and astronautical sciences.” The award is the most prestigious award granted by the Tennessee Section. Dr. Frankel is a professor in the Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
  • On Tuesday, Oct. 12 members of the William Blount High School Senior Athletic Leadership Team (S.A.L.T.) paid a visit to Carpenters Middle School to speak with the Junior BETA Club about high school life and leadership. S.A.L.T. members, some of whom were former CMS students themselves, related personal stores of success and answered questions about what it takes to be successful at the high school level. S.A.L.T. is sponsored by Mike Brewer. The club participates in service projects and provides leadership to fellow William Blount High School students.
