  • The 2011 Alcoa Youth Baseball 6U Champions are the Red Sox.   • Eleven members of the Maryville-Alcoa Flying Dolphins swim team competed in the Atomic Kids Triathlon at Oak Ridge on Saturday, July 16. The Atomic Kids Triathlon, sponsored by the Oak Ridge Track Club, consists of a 200 meter swim, a 2 mile bike ride, and a 1 mile run. Athletes shown following the event include front, from left:  Lauren Eccles (overall top female finisher in junior division), Kristen Schultze (3rd place in female 7-8 division), Karie Schultze (2nd place in female 7-8 division), Ethan Hathcock (6th place in the male 9-10 division), Seth Jinks (overall top male finisher in junior division), Rachel Eccles (2nd place in female 11-12 division), back, from left:  Katrina Eccles (1st place in female 13-14 division), Bree Eccles (2nd place in female 13-14 division and fastest overall swimmer for all divisions, male and female), Sadie Counts (5th place in female 13-14 division), Anna Hathcock (6th place in female 13-14 division) and Jacob Wimmer (1st  place in male 11-12 division).
  • The Food Connection got a boost from Food Lion Browns Creek recently when the Food Lion Foundation made a $3,000 donation to help less fortunate families in Blount County.  Making the check presentation to Dean Moss, center, president of the Food Connection, are John Walla, store manager; and Lisa Cody, customer service manager.

  • Melissa Nance, executive director for Friends of Literacy, joined an elite group of women Thursday night, Aug. 18, as she was chosen for one of six 2011 Tribute to Women awards by the YWCA of Knoxville. The announcement came at a gala event at the Bijou Theatre attended by more than 550 guests. Congratulating Melissa is Mick Reed, a Friends of Literacy board member. Tribute to Women began in 1985 and annually honors outstanding women for their contributions to community, equality, empowerment and being an agent for change.
  • Kevin, Cindy, Gage and Alexandra Montgomery enjoy a trip to Myrtle Beach.
  • Pictured are Steven Davis and daughter, Monica Davis, at the opening ceremonies of the Smoky Mountain Classic Tennessee Walking Horse show in Harriman in May. Steven was Ringmaster and Monica was on the Flag Horse, Dollar’s Rhythm Queen.
