  • Craig Hurst stops for a photo with Stefanie Wittler at the conclusion of the 2010 Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas. Stefanie represented Tennessee and placed 2nd runner-up for the Miss America 2010 title.
  • Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Heritage High School students in Mrs. Beddingfield’s creative writing class hosted a poetry mixer with Mrs. Smiddy’s junior AP English class and members of the administration to celebrate the creation of their poetry journal “The Crier.” During the first four weeks of school, the students worked hard to create various types of poems ranging from structured poems such as the Tanka, Cinquain and Haiku to Ballads, Sonnets and Free Verse. Mrs. Smiddy’s AP English students, who are studying a unit on poetry analysis, analyzed and critiqued each one of the poems. During the presentation, some students recited famous poems and then each student read two of their favorite poems they wrote. Out of a class of only 14 students, seventy poems were included in their journal along with student created art work. Students are looking forward to entering some of their poems in the upcoming Roane State Academic Festival.
  • Dr. Jeff Eberting of Maryville and Dr. Jon Lucas of Franklin, both representing the American Association of Orthodontists, met with Congressman Jimmy Duncan last month in Washington, D.C., to discuss key issues with the health-care bill as it pertains to dentists and small business owners.
  • These Knoxville Ice Bears team members stopped by Children’s Hospital to visit with Nathan Odom.

  • Maryville residents Stuart and Mason Trenda rang in the New Year under Atlanta’s Georgia Dome thanks to the Chick-fil-A restaurant in Alcoa. The father-son pair won the restaurant’s Bowl in the Box contest and two tickets to the Chick-fil-A Bowl in which the Virginia Tech Hokies defeated the University of Tennesse Volunteers 37-14.
  • Christiana Fe Elfstrom and Kory Anderson Jones will be married on March 5 at Everett Hills Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m. Christiana is the daughter of Matt and Karen Elfstrom of Maryville and Kory is the son of Phil and Karen Jones also of Maryville. Christiana attends Pellissippi State and teaches at Ebenezer Children’s Academy. Kory attends the University of Tennessee and works at Blount Discount Pharmacy.
  • DeAnna Lois Etchison, a sophomore at Maryville High School, celebrated her “Sweet Sixteen” birthday on Jan. 9 with a 1950s theme “Sock Hop” at Chilhowee Club, inviting a few of her close friends. In lieu of gifts, this giving individual asked for donations of non-perishable food to be given to the Second Harvest Food Bank in Knoxville. Her friends responded in such a positive way that a trunk full of food was given to those in need. DeAnna would like to challenge others to reach out to those in need and do the same this year during their personal birthday celebrations.
  • Officers from the Air National Guard 119th Command and Control Squadron present a check for $5,000 to Eddie Mannis, chairman of HonorAir Knoxville. This is the second year the Squadron selected HonorAir as the recipient of the proceeds of their annual fundraising event. HonorAir flies World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to see the World War II Memorial built in their honor. The organization will take its 7th flight in April. Members used homemade gingerbread men, corn shuck dolls, paper and popcorn chains, as well as native plants and berries to create a festive, but traditional atmosphere.   • Anna Stout found the perfect jersey for School Spirit Day at Heritage Middle School. The jersey belongs to her father, Steve Stout, who is assistant principal at Heritage High School. He graduated from Heritage in 1983.
  • The FCE Club (Family, Community, Education) part of the University of Tennessee Agriculture, recently held one of their monthly meetings to enjoy a picnic on the lake.   • The annual Girl Scout Raft Race took place recently on Hiwassee River in Reliance, Tenn. Girl Scouts from throughout the area worked with their troops to build rafts, and then competed by floating and paddling down the river. Pictured here are the purple and yellow teams from Girl Scout Cadette troop 20905. They won the Girl Scout Skills award for their rafts. Troop members who participated are Meagan Jamison, Darya Meredith, Brittany F, Jessie Mitchell, Becca Alfara, Kori Rhyne, Brianna Brown, Angela Dominessey, Michaela Akins, Krista Murphy and Destany Struth.

  • Residents at Asbury Place in Maryville cheered on the Vols recently as they took on the Florida Gators during “Family, Food and Football.” The residents enjoyed a cookout with their families and cheering the Vols to a close game with the Gators. Every time UT scored, everyone shook their pom poms and sang Rocky Top at the top of their lungs.
  • The Elizabeth Paxton Houston Society Children of the American Revolution and the Mary Blount DAR sponsored the 4th Annual Constitution Week Bell Ringing at the Revolutionary War marker on the Blount County Court House lawn. Pictured are the C.A.R., DAR and Sons of the American Revolution that were among those attending. After the children lead the group in reciting the Preamble to the Constitution, signed 222 years ago on September 17, everyone rang a bell.
  • Ezra Wildsmith poses with his new “big boy truck” he got for his fourth birthday. He is the son of Steve Wildsmith of Maryville.
  • Jordan Hoyos won first place in the 63rd annual Tennessee Chess Association Novice Division. By winning all five of his games, Jordan achieved the only perfect 5.0 score in his division. He was presented with a check for $250 and a beautiful plaque. Jordan is in the fifth grade at Alcoa Middle School. He is the son of Sandra Davis Hoyos and Fred Hoyos.

  • Members of Altrusa International, who is a part of an international association of professional women and men, volunteer their energies and expertise in projects dedicated to community betterment. Mary Kay Hamlin hosted her club for a picnic at her home in Maryville.
