  • These baby birds are growing up in a hanging basket at the home of Betty Bowers in Friendsville. They survived the recent storms and are waiting for their time to fly.
  • The boys of homeschool Troop 511, charted by Joshua Home Educators of Tennessee, decided to miss the annual Spring Camporee this year to volunteer their time and energy to do storm cleanup at several properties throughout Blount County. Most notably was Mentor Community Park in the town of Louisville. Together with Cub Pack 511, the boys put in a hard day’s work picking up fallen limbs, many of which were bigger around than the boys’ arms, sticks, twigs and leaves. By the end of the work day, the boys had amassed a pile that was 20 feet wide and 6 feet tall.

  • The General James Longstreet 954 Chapter of the Children of the Confederacy, sponsored by the Captain W.Y.C. Hannum 1881 UDC, commemorated Confederate History Month by placing flowers and Second National Flags on the graves of Confederate soldiers buried at Mt. Moriah Cemetery near Singleton Station Road in Blount County.   • The Elizabeth Paxton Houston Society Children of the American Revolution, sponsored by the Mary Blount DAR, attended the 57th Annual State Conference in March at Montgomery Bell State Park near Nashville. The Society won several awards, including that of one of the three top Societies in the state. Society President Cheyenne Miller was elected State Second Vice President for 2011-2012, and Charlotte J. Miller was elected Senior Second Vice President. Society vice president Dylan Moya’s essay on the US Flag won recognition. In the National Chaplain contest, Amber and Austin Hall were recognized for the prayers submitted.   • Local members of the Society Daughters of Colonial Wars in the State of Tennessee met at the Chattanooga Choo Choo for the spring meeting. The program, based on the Battle of Missionary Ridge, was given by Professor Steve Bartlett of the McCallie School for Boys.   • Neighbors and friends from Crosswinds Subdivision joined together March 31-April 4 for an enjoyable bus trip to Washington, D.C., at the peak of the Cherry Blossom Festival. Their trip included a visit to Arlington Cemetery for the changing of the guard and viewing of the Confederate Dead Memorial. They enjoyed a walking tour around the White House, a visit to the national monuments and memorials, the National Cathedral, the Smithsonian Museums, and the Capitol. They also explored Mount Vernon.   • Congratulations to Crystal and James Radke of Maryville, who were married Feb. 4, 2011, by the Rev. John Conley, uncle of the bride. Crystal is the daughter of Randal and Martha Conley. James is the son of Kyle and Carol Bolinger. Crystal was escorted to the alter by her son, Silas Satterfield.
  • The East Tennessee Daffodil Society hosted the American Daffodil Society Southeast Regional Show, Daffodils on Parade, at the University of Tennessee in March. Brenda Gregory, Vice President of the Tuckaleechee Garden Club of Townsend and a Blount County Master Gardener, received the American Daffodil Society Small Growers Ribbon for the best standard daffodil.

  • This photo was taken recently in Cades Cove along the Loop Road before reaching the Carter-Shields cabin. The mother bear, carrying her cub in her mouth, crossed the road and headed up the mountain toward North Carolina.
  • The 13 and 14 year old Blount County Parks and Recreation Basketball Championship was held on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Everett Recreation Center. The matchup was between the Green Team and the Blue Team. The Blue Team went on to defeat the Green Team 39-32. Both teams gave their best effort and provided lots of excitement for fans. The Blue Team roster includes: back row, Richie Koons, Michael Wilson, Daniel West; front row, Parker Pewitt, Seth Hodge, James Williams and Jared Helton; not pictured: Jacob Williams and Billy Lewellyn. The Blue Team was coached by Dan West and Terry Williams.
  • Mary Blount Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution presented the Outstanding American History Teacher award to Rob Kuban of Maryville Middle and the Outstanding American History Essay award to Samuel Alexander, also of Maryville Middle at the Annual Awards Tea.   • Mary Blount DAR presented the DAR Good Citizen Award to outstanding seniors from six area high schools at the Annual Awards Tea in February.   • President Elaine Russell and Registrar Debra Wilson, members of the Capt. W.Y.C. Hannum Chapter 1881 of the Daughters of the Confederacy, Maryville, TN, were on the road again in search of Confederate Ancestors and to honor their Southern Heritage. Their travels took them to the Georgia Archives in Morrow, Ga.; the Heard County Historical Center and Museum in Franklin County, Ga.; a visit with UDC members of the Admiral Semmes Chapter 57 in Auburn, Ala.; the Alabama Archives in Montgomery, and finally to the library at Samford University in Birmingham. While in Montgomery the travelers also visited the 1st White House of the Confederacy, Oakwood Cemetery and the gravesite of singer, Hank Williams.   • Lisa Thomas is pictured with three handsome soldiers from Fort Benning, Ga. They came to help Kathy Orcutt of Hugs for Our Soldiers pick up and mail over 1,000 Christmas for a Soldier goody bags. They were sent to Afghanistan. Lisa Thomas Salon was an official drop off location. Lisa also received help from the Sam Davis Chapter of the Children of the Confederacy and Knoxville Chapter 89 United Daughters of the Confederacy.

  • KayLee Sloan talks with Taz Cable, the host of the Internet television show “Oh! After Dark TV.” The two were at the Maryville Downtown Film Festival in 2010.
  • Elizabeth Bonita Kiles celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 29 at Shannondale of Maryville. Born in Loretta, Kentucky, she attended St. Catherine’s Academy in Holy Cross where she learned to play the violin. Later she taught herself to play the organ and enjoys music still. She moved to Maryville in 2004 with her son and daughter-in-law, James and Rebecca Kiles. She says her earliest memory is of watching the victory parade at the end of World War I. She married Max Kiles in 1941. During World War II, Elizabeth assembled parts for bombs at a factory in Angola, Indiana. She completed cosmetology school at the age of 50. She has 2 children, 5 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.   • Shannondale of Maryville Retirement Center crowned their “King and Queen” at the Valentine’s Day Party on Monday, Feb. 14. Alden Smith, who will celebrate his 100th birthday next month, was “crowned” as “King of Shannondale Retirement Center 2011.” The honor of “Queen” was bestowed on Jennie Bianconi, a retired nurse and Eucharistic Minister. Smith, who holds a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, has been a resident of Shannondale since 2002, shortly after the Retirement Center opened. Prior to that, he and his late wife Lois resided in Maryville. Bianconi, a graduate of Columbia University, and her husband Owen have called Shannondale ‘home’ since they moved here from his hometown of Nashville in January 2007.

  • Blount County Mayor Ed Mitchell, Maryville Mayor Tom Taylor and Alcoa Mayor Don Mull present a proclamation to Mary Morse of the Tennessee Nutrition & Consumer Education Program/University of Tennessee Extension, Blount County, and Maryville City Schools Coordinated School Health coordinator and Blount BEneFITs chairperson Heather Ledbetter on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at the Blount County Courthouse. The cities of Maryville and Alcoa, along with Blount County now are proclaimed to be a “We Can!” community, which unites and promotes all of the health and wellness initiatives in Blount County. “We Can!” (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition) was developed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to help communities address the issues of overweight children.

Both graduates received their GED diploma with assistance from East Tennessee PBS’ GED Connection Program. The nonprofit television station provides participants with a set of study books at no cost to the individual and broadcasts weekly 30-minute shows that consist of documentary-style programs to help viewers prepare for the GED exam.

Maryville Kiwanis not only raises money to assist in sustaining important projects and organizations, but its membership is active in supporting them with volunteer hours. A variety of members volunteer as many as 50 hours of their time each month stocking and distributing groceries.
