  • Tremont just hosted the annual conference for the Association of Nature Center Administrators (ANCA). The conference had just under 200 participants from 37 states and Canada on Tremont’s campus for 4 days.
  • The Blount Count Sheriff Office Citizens Academy Alumni Association recently toured the new Knoxville FBI facility. The purpose of the alumni organization is to unite the alumni of past Citizen’s Academy classes to provide support to the employees of the Blount County Sheriff’s Office and to increase public awareness and community support of local law enforcement.
  • The Blount United Soccer Club U17 Boys team won the North Atlanta Soccer Association (NASA) Soccer tournament in August.   • Brooke Longhurst celebrating her sixth birthday at a cookout in the Cades Cove picnic area. Her birthday was Aug. 12. Brooke is the daughter of Glen and Emily Longhurst and granddaughter of Glen and Hiroko Davis of Maryville, and the granddaughter of Bill and Elaine Longhurst of Guthrie, Ky.
  • Hunter Anderson, Austin Burchell and Marshall Cooper enjoy a fun day at Dollywood in August.
  • On Saturday, May 28, at 7:30 in the evening, Kelli LeighAnne Landers, daughter of Gregg and Kim Landers of Maryville, was united in marriage with William Jacob Little, son of Lannis and Leann Little of Maryville. The outdoor wedding ceremony was held at the home of Pamela Guider, the bride’s aunt. A cake and punch party was held following the ceremony. Kelli is a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University and is employed as a Registered Nurse at Blount Memorial Hospital. Jacob is an Applications Analyst for the Information Systems Department at Blount Memorial Hospital. After a honeymoon in Cancun, Mexico, they are at home in Maryville.

  • The officers of the Mary Blount Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) hosted the annual Prospective and New Member Brunch at the home of Chapter Regent Lynda Williams on August 13. The video “Today’s DAR” was shown to give an overview of the many projects and activities of the DAR on the national and local level. Officers shared highlights of the chapter activities, and chapter registrar Debra Wilson outlined the application process. Seated in front are Vice Regent Elaine Russell and Regent Lynda Williams.   • 2011 Greenback 9 and 10 Year Dixie Youth All-Stars won the District 8 Championship. In the 7 games of sub-district and district tournament play, the undefeated Greenback Cherokees scored a total of 83 runs including 4 “out of the park” home runs and allowed opposing teams only 9 runs. The District 8 Champs advanced on to the TN Dixie Youth AAA State Tournament held in Mt. Pleasant. Greenback finished 8th out of 837 teams that make up the TN Dixie Youth 9 and 10 year old league.   • Essays written by five Heritage Middle School students were selected by Congressman John Duncan, Jr., for printing in the Congressional Record. The students (Lindsey Basham, Garrett Headrick, Michaela Hearon, Mackenzie Kindig, Kayla Kirkland) were part of a group of 98 eighth graders and 10 teachers who were given a personal tour of the United States Capitol Building by Congressman Duncan and aide Rebecca Forster on May 5. Congressman Duncan also discussed the legislative process with the students, who later watched the voting process in the House of Representatives visitors’ gallery.
  • Several Mary Blount members greeted the arrival of the August 3, 2011 Honor Air Flight and member Brenda Sellers, who served as the guardian for two of the WWII veterans on the flight. Mary Blount members and the Elizabeth Paxton Houston Society C.A.R. members prepared cards for these veterans for the return flight “Mail Call.” Pictured in front are Brenda Sellers, Judy Rollins, and Brenda Holt.   • The happy couple at Smithview Pavillion is Dawn Doss and Jonathan Tipton. The couple were married on April 23, which was also a special day for Smithview Pavilion. It was the 100th wedding at Smithview since it opened in June, 2008.

  • Andrew Herman receives his winners trophy at the TGA Junior Golf Tour event held at Baneberry Country Club after shooting a 3 under par 33. Andrew Herman, 10, a student of Foothills Elementary, shot a 3 under par 33 in a Tennessee Golf Association event at Baneberry. He has tournament scores this year of 3 under at Baneberry, 2 under par 34 at Lake Haven Country Club in Athens and 1 under par 35 at Moccasin Bend in Chattanooga. Andrew also shot an even par 36 during the recent Knoxville Area TGA Tour Championship event at Egwani Farms.
  • Mary Blount Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Elizabeth Paxton Houston Society Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) participated in the 41st Annual Fourth of July celebration at James White Fort in Knoxville organized by the Stephen Holston Chapter Sons of the American Revolution.   • Members of the Maryville-Alcoa Civitan Club helped to serve over 600 guests at the annual Special Olympics Hamburger Lunch Fundraiser on July 15 at First Baptist Church in Maryville. Civitan Club members are loyal supporters and volunteers at all Special Olympics activities in our community and even at the State level for skiing and ice skating at Ober Gatlinburg. Helping at the hamburger lunch are, in front from left, Suzanne Rhoden, Tammy Ferguson, Bridget Jenkins, Genny Kidd, Lynda Thurston and Anna Kay Morgan. Civitan is a worldwide, all-volunteer community service organization with a focus on serving people with developmental disabilities. The club meets at noon on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at Green Meadow Country Club. New members are always welcome.
  • Chloe Edmands, left, and Asha Green of Knoxville view the Coast Guard Cutter Ouachita during a recent visit to Fort Loudoun State Park. The Ouachita and crew, stationed in Chattanooga, periodically make trips to Knoxville surveying the navigable waterways. On their recent trip, they docked at the Park for a picnic sponsored by area Coast Guard Auxiliary units and their families.
  • The Tuckaleechee Garden Club July Yard of the Month was awarded to Kenneth and Jerilyn Myers of Townsend. The yard features dogwoods, daylilies, multiple iris, beds of pink coneflowers and gaura (whirling butterflies) and knock-out roses. In addition, a gorgeous vegetable garden is part of the landscaping and includes an asparagus bed. A swale made with hand-carried river rock borders the stone wall next to the flower beds near the driveway. The garden was selected by Tuckaleechee members Barbara Spence and Jane Caruso.   • Thirty-four rising eighth graders from Eagleton, Heritage, and Maryville Middle Schools participated in the eighth annual Youth Leadership Adventure Camp July 10-15 at Camp Wesley Woods sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Maryville. While at camp, the campers learned about various aspects of leadership and how to become better school and community leaders. With the help of Camp Wesley Woods counselors and resource staff, campers challenged themselves by rock climbing, zip-lining, hiking, and canoeing. Guest speakers, including State Sen. Doug Overbey, Brenda Sellers, Roger Murphy, Diana Lovelace (Maryville College), Tim Richardson, and Vincent Charlow discussed the importance of good leadership, character, and communication. The campers used their new leadership skills to plan service projects for their schools and community. Maryville Kiwanian Camp Director Randy Allen lauded these campers as “the best yet.”

  • Eleven members of the Maryville-Alcoa Flying Dolphins swim team competed in the Atomic Kids Triathlon at Oak Ridge on Saturday, July 16. The Atomic Kids Triathlon, sponsored by the Oak Ridge Track Club, consists of a 200 meter swim, a 2 mile bike ride, and a 1 mile run.   • The Food Connection got a boost from Food Lion Browns Creek recently when the Food Lion Foundation made a $3,000 donation to help less fortunate families in Blount County.   • Cathy De La Cuesta gets a visit from Lorelai and “Crackers.”
  • Melissa Nance, executive director for Friends of Literacy, joined an elite group of women Thursday night, Aug. 18, as she was chosen for one of six 2011 Tribute to Women awards by the YWCA of Knoxville. The announcement came at a gala event at the Bijou Theatre attended by more than 550 guests. Congratulating Melissa is Mick Reed, a Friends of Literacy board member. Tribute to Women began in 1985 and annually honors outstanding women for their contributions to community, equality, empowerment and being an agent for change.

  • Elizabeth Brooke Russell, daughter of Douglas and Sharon Russell of Maryville, was united in marriage with John Robert Kennedy, son of Bill and Susan Kennedy of Chattanooga. The wedding was held May 28 at Tyner United Methodist Church in Chattanooga. Dr. Robert Haskins officiated. Following the ceremony, a dinner reception was held at the Chattanooga Marriott at the Convention Center. After a wedding trip to Disney World in Orlando, the couple are living in Chattanooga. The bride is a full time student at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The groom is an engineer with High Bridge Associates, Inc.
  • Everett High School Class of 1959 enjoyed the alumni luncheon at Heritage High School in June.
  • Home Federal Bank employee Shelley Burgstiner envisions walking through the door of the Habitat for Humanity home that she will share with 2-year-old daughter Riley. Following Burgstiner’s acceptance into the program, the bank arranged for their employee volunteers to build the home, which is the bank’s 21st. Home Federal Bank is Knoxville Habitat for Humanity’s longest standing covenant partner, which involves providing $30,000 and significant volunteer manpower per residence.

The Rev. Lewis Bunn, uncle of the bride, officiated. After a wedding trip to Savannah, Ga., the couple are living in Los Angeles. The bride is an actress/talent coordinator and writer. The bridegroom is a writer/film maker.

  • Steve, Tessa and Ezra Wildsmith enjoy a warm evening on Topsail Island Beach, North Carolina.
  • Travis J. Groth was recently conferred a Doctorate of Medicine degree from Debusk College of Osteopathic Medicine at Lincoln Memorial University during the May 14 Commencement Ceremonies. Groth will complete his residency training in family practice at East Tennessee State University in Kingsport, Tennessee. In 2007 he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Maryville College. Groth is a 2003 graduate of Maryville Christian School, where he received the East Tennessee Foundation Gordon W. and Agnes P. Cobb Scholarship. He is married to Jennifer Hawkins Groth also formerly of Maryville, and his parents are Ruthie and Barry Groth.
  • Haley Katherine Stinnett, of Maryville, recently received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological Sciences from East Tennessee State University at their May 7 Commencement Ceremonies. Stinnett was a Summa Cum Laude graduate and was honored with the Outstanding Student Award by the Biological Science Department Faculty. Stinnett will continue her education at the University of Chicago. She was selected from a nationwide pool of applicants to be part of the Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy’s graduate program in Integrative Biology. This five year program will provide full support to Stinnett as she she completes her PhD. Stinnett is a 2007 graduate of William Blount High School. She is the daughter of Gary and Rhonda Stinnett of Maryville, and the granddaughter of Robert and Lloyd Ann Sheets and Carl and Joyce Stinnett of Maryville.
  • The residence of Vicky and Peter Mueller was chosen as Tuckaleechee Garden Club June Yard of the Month by club members Ursula Gillooly and Ann Sorvillo. Located in Townsend, the impressive grounds are extensively landscaped with terraced beds filled with spectacular blooming hydrangeas and hostas. The entrance is a curved driveway around a raised bed planted with a variety of various seasonal flowers and shrubs enclosed by a stone way. Flower filled containers and hanging baskets of daisies, pansies, and geraniums greet visitors at the front door. Pictured are Vicky and Peter Mueller on the stone wall.

  • Alcoa Elementary School’s “Doing the Right Thing” Students of the Month for this year pose for a group photo. Each student was nominated by a teacher after being “caught” doing a kind deed for someone and then put into “the barrel of goodness” for the drawing each month. These kids are rewarded with a T-shirt, pizza party and a certificate.
  • 13 Domino Dames from Townsend spent a day recently doing something besides play Mexican Train, their usual passion. They went bowling in Pigeon Forge after lunch at the Old Mill.   • Ruby Downey turned 95 on June 4, 2011. She is the mother of nine children, 20 grandchildren and several great and great-great grandchildren. She has outlived her husband, Arthur, and four of her children.

Hannum 1881 Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, donated Confederate History Compendium of Tennessee, to the Blount County Library in commemoration of Confederate History Month. This 1100 page book is the Sesquicentennial Project of the Tennessee Division United Daughters of the Confederacy and includes information about Confederate activity, monuments,CSA enlistment units, Confederate pension applications from each Tennessee County.   • As part of the Commemoration of Confederate History Month, the General James Longstreet 954 Children of the Confederacy (CofC), sponsored by the Captain W.Y.C. Hannum 1881 UDC, place a Second National Flag and flowers at the grave of Private Grigsby Rush Willocks located in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. He served, along with his twin brother Robert, in Thomas' Legion, Company H, CSA in North Carolina. The military marker was originally installed and dedicated by the CofC in 2007.
