Greenback Tornado

Grace Coada escaped what is left of her home after the Blount County Fire Department kicked in her door. Grace said she had been in her bedroom before the tornado hit when her cat, Bubba, started acting strange and crying to get in the house. Grace left her bedroom and went to the front of the house to let the cat in, opening the door just as the tornado hit, knocking her into the front room. The house was picked up from its foundation and dropped in her front yard, as seen in the photo to the right. Bubba is still missing.

  • Rick Pilkenton, standing in front of the camper where he lived, was one of the injured. Pilkenton said he barely got inside with his dog when the wind picked up the camper and tossed and rolled it several times.
  • The road along Hwy. 411 is littered with debris from destroyed homes and businesses.

  • Chrystal Montgomery and Teresa Lay are helping the David Cooper family go through what is left of their home.
  • This home next to the home of local minister David Cooper lost the garage and part of the roof. The owners were out-of-town in Florida and due back last Friday.
  • The trailer that used to stand here on Hwy 411 now lays crumbled on the other side of the highway. Owner Charles Emert was not at home at the time and was happy to find both of his dogs safe.
  • David Cooper, a minister at a local church, was not at home when the tornado destroyed his home and shop. Nothing much is left other then a basement and a car where the garage used to be.
