  • Fifteen members of the Blount County Master Gardeners Association were recognized as Master Gardener Volunteer VIPs at the Feb. 11 meeting at the Farm Bureau office. To be recognized as a Master Gardener Volunteer VIP, a Certified Master Gardener must have participated with the volunteer program for a minimum of three years and provided dedicated and exceptional service for the program’s mission as determined by the Blount County UT Extension Agent John Wilson and the State Master Gardener Coordinator Beth Babbitt. UT Extension Agent John Wilson presented letters of commendation and recognition pins to the awardees.   • The 13 & 14 year old Blount County Parks and Recreation Basketball Championship was held at Alcoa High School on Saturday. Going into the game the Red team had a record of 10-0 and the Blue team had a record of 9-1. An exciting game for fans ended with the Blue Team as champions and a final score of 30-25.   • Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Heritage High School students in Mrs. Beddingfield’s creative writing class hosted a poetry mixer with Mrs. Smiddy’s junior AP English class and members of the administration to celebrate the creation of their poetry journal “The Crier.” During the first four weeks of school, the students worked hard to create various types of poems ranging from structured poems such as the Tanka, Cinquain and Haiku to Ballads, Sonnets and Free Verse. Mrs. Smiddy’s AP English students, who are studying a unit on poetry analysis, analyzed and critiqued each one of the poems. During the presentation, some students recited famous poems and then each student read two of their favorite poems they wrote. Out of a class of only 14 students, seventy poems were included in their journal along with student created art work. Students are looking forward to entering some of their poems in the upcoming Roane State Academic Festival.

  • The Captain W.Y.C. Hannum UDC and the Gen. James Longstreet CofC placed at wreath at the grave of the UDC chapter’s namesake at Old Gray Cemetery in Knoxville on the occasion of his birthday, Dec. 22. Captain Hannum, a Maryville native, joined the 48th Co. B of Virginia while a cadet at the Virginia Military Institute in 1861.   • In Panama City on Nov. 7, 2009, Matt Snow completed the Florida Ford Ironman in 13 hours and 24 minutes. After serving in the U.S. Army, he became involved with road races and distant bike rides to raise money and awareness for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and on to the Ironman. His name is in the lottery for the Kona, Ironman in October. The Ironman is a race of 2.5 mile ocean swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. 3,000 participants competed in this year’s race.

  • Officers from the Air National Guard 119th Command and Control Squadron present a check for $5,000 to Eddie Mannis, chairman of HonorAir Knoxville. This is the second year the Squadron selected HonorAir as the recipient of the proceeds of their annual fundraising event. HonorAir flies World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to see the World War II Memorial built in their honor. The organization will take its 7th flight in April.   • DeAnna Lois Etchison, a sophomore at Maryville High School, celebrated her “Sweet Sixteen” birthday on Jan. 9 with a 1950s theme “Sock Hop” at Chilhowee Club, inviting a few of her close friends. In lieu of gifts, this giving individual asked for donations of non-perishable food to be given to the Second Harvest Food Bank in Knoxville. Her friends responded in such a positive way that a trunk full of food was given to those in need. DeAnna would like to challenge others to reach out to those in need and do the same this year during their personal birthday celebrations.
