Charles Kenneth McDowell

Charles Kenneth McDowell, 85, of Friendsville died September 21, 2010 at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was born in Alcoa October 5, 1924. He was preceded in death by his Father: Joseph S. McDowell; Beloved Mother: Mary Stewart McDowell Campbell; Brothers: Leon and Wayne McDowell and Bobby Campbell; his precious Son: Christopher McDowell; and Mother and Father-in-law: Obie and Carrie Blair Henry. Kenneth was a Christian and a member of First Baptist Church of Friendsville. He was previously a Sunday school teacher, Deacon, and attended faithfully until his health restricted him. His church and Sunday school meant everything to him. He was a WWII Veteran serving in the Army as a Machine Gunner and Squad Leader in New Guinea and in the Philippines. Kenneth was formally a Scoutmaster, board member of Friendsville Academy, board member of Community Action, Post Master, City Commissioner, and Mayor of Friendsville. He helped form the city and help write the charter. He loved his home town. Ken had many friends throughout his life that brought happiness and love to him: Bud and Virginia Hitch, J.K. and Bobbie McClellan, Dan and Glenda Draper, Jerry and Wanda Hayes, Kirk McDaniel, Sylvia Springer, Doris Bivnes and her deceased husband Beecher, Bon A Kelly, Dorothy Poland and her deceased husband Bob, the wonderful memories of Lynnie Rose and Della Thompson who gave him encouragement and hope through his life, the families that gave him work when he was young, and the Blount County Orphan home where he lived a while as a child. He is survived by his Beloved Wife of 62 years: Betty Henry McDowell; Precious Son: Jeff McDowell of Huntsville, AL; Daughter: Sylvia (Missy) Gingrich and husband Carter of Guam; Daughter-in-law: Vickie McDowell of Gatlinburg. Most special his Grandchildren: Paul and Meredith McDowell, Cassie and John Gingrich, Ben McDowell; Foster Granddaughter: Rhonda Tovar and sons of Frankfort, IN. His Brothers and Sisters-in-law whose love and caring ways were so special: Bill and Alice McDowell of Knoxville, Joe and Mary Charles of Louisville; Sister-in-law: Mildred McDowell of Knoxville; Brothers-in-law: Tom Henry and George and Betty Henry, many Nieces and Nephews who he loved, and so many great friends through the years. The light of his Tuesday and gift of love brought to him each week: Bill and Fran Funk, Fredric and Angel St. Hill we appreciate you. We can never forget his Doctor Wally Werner, his staff, his former nurse, Linda for the care and kindness they gave Ken and me. All the goodness and love shown is a gift from God. Special God Bless to Doctor Mark Grubb. Funeral Services will be 8:00 P.M. Thursday, September 23, 2010 with Rev. Scott Kidd and William Funk officiating. Family and Friends will meet at Unitia Cemetery at 11:00 A.M. Friday, September 24, for a Military Graveside Service. The Family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home.
