Union Grove Middle and William Blount High in the running for $150,000

Two Blount County schools are in the top 100 in a nationwide contest that will give $150,000 to the school with the most votes of support.

William Blount High School is at 53 and Union Grove Middle is at 78 on the Top 100 list for Calling All Communities this week. Seymour Primary School in Seymour was ranked number 1. The contest is sponsored by U.S. Cellular.

A total of 10 Tennessee schools are currently in the Top 100. The top 18 schools with the most votes will win. The school with the most votes will win $150,000, and the remaining 17 schools will win $50,000 each. Voting ends on Oct. 6.

“With the time left to rally votes, any school still has a chance to join the frontrunners and win,” said Jack Brundige, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Tennessee. “Each year, we are amazed at how many schools are powered to the top by surges in community spirit throughout the campaign. Our commitment to empowering communities to support local schools is one of the reasons we have the happiest customers in wireless.”

As of 8 a.m. Sept. 22, the top 100 schools lead a total of more than 1,800 schools throughout the country that have received community votes. So far, more than 333,000 votes have been cast.

In the past two years, four schools in Tennessee have been named Calling All Communities champions: Seymour High School in Seymour and A.H. Roberts Elementary School in Livingston in 2010. In 2009, Heritage High School and Bearden High School in Knoxville were winners in the contest.

Anyone 18 years or older can visit any U.S. Cellular store and ask an associate for a code to vote for their favorite school at uscellular.com. Each voting code gives people the opportunity to vote online once daily until the campaign ends. In addition, 2,000 randomly-selected voters will be awarded a $25 U.S. Cellular debit card for supporting their schools.

Public and private schools, kindergarten through high school, are eligible to win. No purchase is necessary, and you don’t have to be a U.S. Cellular customer to vote. The winning schools will be announced in October and November. For more information about U.S. Cellular, visit uscellular.com or U.S. Cellular’s Facebook page.
