Garnet power: Local businesses wear Maryville College colors on Thursdays

Football is big in Blount County, and several local businesses would like to remind their customers and patrons that after every Friday night, they have another “hometown team” to root for on Saturday.

The team’s colors are orange and garnet, players are led onto the gridiron with a bagpiper, and students (many sporting kilts and sabers) cheer wildly for “the Scots.”

That hometown team is Maryville College, and numerous businesses - as well as employees of the Blount County Chamber of Commerce and the City of Maryville - will be wearing garnet polo shirts every Thursday this fall to show their support for the four-year college, its students and athletics program.

Maryville College Marketing Director Mary Leidig described the idea for “Maryville College Thursdays” as “simple and fun.”

“With businesses wearing Maryville College polo shirts every Thursday this fall and showcasing our college shakers, we’re creating a groundswell that boosts community spirit and our college athletics and student spirit,” she said.

The shirts, which have the college’s sports logo printed on them, are free to all businesses participating. They were distributed by members of the Scots football team on Monday.

Mike Adams, general manager of The Market on the corner of Washington and High streets, said he and his employees are excited to partner with the college in this way.

“Being a community-based market, we believe in supporting our hometown college and our local high schools,” he said. ‘“Maryville College Thursdays’ is a great way for our entire community to support Maryville College.”

Leidig said she continues to talk with businesses that want to partner with the college for “Maryville College Thursdays.” Additional shirts can be ordered for owners and employees who would like to participate.

“This is an easy way to join us in celebrating our Maryville College Scots during fall football season,” she added. “We know this will become a tradition that will grow, and we will embrace as the years go by.

“We also view this as a way that we can recognize those people who support us year-round and say ‘Thank you’ for all you do for us and our community.”
