Wowing the judges and winning the Judges’ Choice award for “Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man’s Chest” was Sarah Jones.

What an honor it was to be one of the judges at this year’s Edible Book Contest at the Blount County Public Library. I was able to see some wonderfully creative displays of carefully sculpted creations. No doubt these masterpieces took a lot of time.

The annual event was held June 23 through June 26. Each edible creation depicted a fictional or nonfictional literary work found in the permanent collection of the Blount County Public Library.

Each food creation had to be 95 percent edible, with edible being defined as made of food or foodstuffs. A list of all the ingredients had to accompany each entry.

Adults and children alike got into the spirit of creating literary masterpieces. The age categories were Juveniles from 8 to 12 years old; Young Adult with ages 13 to 19 years old; and Adult for those age 20 and older.

Prizes were awarded for Judges Choice, Most Creative and Most Humorous, along with first, second and third place in each division. Each entry was judged on originality and creativity, skill and construction, visual appeal and tie-in with the literary work being depicted.

I was happy to be selected by the library as one of the judges so I could share this with Blount Today readers. The cakes were truly magnificent.
