Before Relay: Blount Memorial Hospital Spirit Day brings in funds

As the grand finale of Relay for Life kicks off this weekend with a community-wide event at Maryville College, participants will see some teams with fundraising totals in the thousands and ten-thousands. Many groups work for months before the June 3-4 Relay for Life, raising money through everything from bake sales to bike rides.

Three events that Blount Today covered showed the range of things that can be done to raise money for cancer research.

One strong team for Relay always comes from Blount Memorial Hospital. This year the change in rules allowed the Relayers from the hospital to all be on the same team.

The Relay for Life Spirit Day was a festive occasion for Blount Memorial Hospital employees, their families and folks in the community.

The Blount Memorial Band of Blues Relay for Life team collected a total of $5,280 on Spirit Day.

Activities included coffee and pastries from 8 to 9:30 a.m.; kettle corn, funnel cakes, fresh squeezed lemonade, hamburgers and hotdogs served by administrators and department heads; a silent auction; a cutest pet contest; a cookbook sale and a “Guess the Candy” count. There was also an opportunity for one employee to win a prime parking spot for the month of December of 2011.
