Slimfest: Summer party with a winter theme

It will be hard to think about a cold December night on Aug. 6, but many of the folks in the SlimFest audience will have a holly, jolly Christmas on their minds. Without the events of that August night, the nights in December would be pretty bleak for a lot of Blount County children.

SlimFest is an adult party with a heart for children. Beneficiaries of this 6th annual event are the Fraternal Order of Police’s Shop With a Cop program and the booster clubs of Alcoa and Maryville High Schools. SlimFest annually funds almost 100 percent of Shop With a Cop, as well as makes a donation to the booster clubs. So, for those getting into the party and the reverse raffle that are the hallmarks of SlimFest, the frivolity has a serious purpose: to provide for the children of all three programs.

A free outdoor concert, SlimFest is the brain-child of Steve “Slim” Stilts. It began with a birthday party of Stilts that he turned into a community event, complete with a reverse raffle, adult beverages, music and give-aways. This year’s event will be Saturday, Aug. 6, at the New Midland Plaza Amphitheater. Money is raised through sponsorships, a $10,000 reverse raffle and the sell of drink tickets. Waterfront Grill Bar and Grill provides to “means” to have adult beverages, and Wine and Spirits Cellar covers the cost of the alcohol. During the evening, drawings are held to give away prizes. The reverse raffle tickets are $100, with the winner receiving $10,000, with taxes paid by Slimfest. The concert is free, and the purchase of a reverse raffle ticket secures the buyer two tickets to the VIP tent.

The F.O.P. Shop With a Cop annual event takes underprivileged and under-served children in the two cities and county to WalMart to shop for Christmas gifts for themselves and their families. The amount of money the children can spend and how many children are served depends on SlimFest donations. The two booster clubs use the money to help the sports programs at the schools.

Diamond sponsors are Anderson Rental, Phillips Jewelers, Waterfront Bar and Grill, Ken-Jo Markets, TVA, S&S Industries, Clayton Homes, RCC, Wine & Spirits Cellars and Halls Salvage. Print media sponsor is Blount Today.
