Blount Democrats making plans for 2012

With the year at the half-way point, Blount County Democrats are gearing up for the 2012 election cycle, planning for and raising money for their headquarters. In addition to materials for the 2012 re-election campaign for President Obama, the group will have local election materials, buttons, bumper stickers and T-shirts.

Marte Lawrence, party communications director, said the executive committee of the Blount County Democratic Party is working with the Candidate Development Committee to develop local candidates to run for each 2012 office that will be in contention for the 2012 election cycle. Lawrence said the party encourages “any and all local Democrats who would like to consider running for any local office to contact the Blount County Democratic Party through their website at, by phone at 865-679-VOTE (8683) or by mail at Blount County Democratic Party P.O. Box 6552, Maryville, TN 37902-6552.” The party also has a Facebook page.

In early May, Blount Democrats celebrated with the Roosevelt Dinner at the Airport Hilton. The annual gathering honors President Franklin D. Roosevelt, father of the “New Deal.” Keynote speaker was Rep. Joe Armstrong of Knoxville, who spoke to approximately 100 democrats from Blount, Knox, Sevier, Loudon and Monroe counties. He highlighted the accomplishments of democrats over the years, pointing to policies such as Women’s suffrage, Child labor laws, Minimum Wage, Workman’s Comp, Social Security, The G.I. Bill, Head Start, The Civil Rights Act of 1964, Medicaid, Medicare, and Healthcare Reform.
