Clay Puckett has been named Blount Memorial Hospital’s chief information officer (CIO) and assistant administrator. Puckett joins Blount Memorial after working nine years for Carolinas HealthCare System, which serves 33 hospitals in North and South Carolina.
As CIO and an assistant administrator, Puckett will oversee the hospital’s information technology infrastructure, as well as play a crucial role in the implementation of the final stages of the electronic medical records. Blount Memorial chief executive officer Don Heinemann says that Puckett brings extensive senior leadership experience with him from Carolinas HealthCare System. “His experience has encompassed electronic medical records, medical practice systems, revenue cycle, and a variety of clinical and administrative applications. As the health care industry continues to move toward a paperless environment, these systems and initiatives will be increasingly important to Blount Memorial’s success in the future.”
Puckett most recently worked as senior director of information systems at Carolinas HealthCare System, where he was responsible for senior technology leadership for two health care systems affiliated with Carolinas HealthCare System. The systems encompassed four acute care hospitals and 35 physician practices with more than 100 providers. Before becoming senior director in 2007, he was director of information services for Carolinas HealthCare System for five years. Prior to his time at Carolinas HealthCare System, Puckett was a partner in Providence Systems Group and a senior project manager for Wachovia Corporation.
Puckett graduated magna cum laude from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. in 1978 with a bachelor of arts degree, with a major in communication arts and a minor in business administration. He then earned his master of business administration degree in 1979 from James Madison University.
Puckett and his wife, Denise, live in Maryville and have a daughter, Danielle, who will be graduating from the University of Alabama in August with a major in health care management.
