Two Maryville Police officer were honored with Officer of the Year designations during a meeting of the Maryville Police Department Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association
“This year we had two winners,” said club secretary Shari Erwin. “Officer Rod Fernandez and Officer Eric Gutridge were awarded the honor. There was an incident where they were able to keep a man from committing suicide, so they were both awarded Officer of the Year honors and presented with plaques and checks for $50 each.”
Police Chief Tony Crisp said the incident occurred on June 7 in the basement of a West Maryville home where a man was poised to shoot himself. “It was a suicide call,” Crisp remembered. “A man was in the basement of a house, in a chair and had plastic down. They were able to talk him out of what he was about to do,” the chief said. “They distracted him with the use of a taser. They were able subdue him and take the gun.”
