Coastal based military aircraft from East Coast military bases are evacuating and taking shelter at McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base.
Aircraft from these locations are utilizing both the Tennessee Army and Air National Guard facilities at McGhee Tyson to assist with the efforts.
Due to the ongoing evacuations centered around Hurricane Irene, McGhee Tyson ANG Base is located far enough inland to provide the required support necessary to safeguard these assets.
Since late yesterday, numerous aircraft have been arriving and more are expected in later today.
Once the storm system passes and the threat is no longer valid, these personnel and equipment will return to their home stations.
Blount Today will have photographs of some of the aircraft on the website by 4 p.m. today.
