The D3 Senior Classic has named three Maryville College football players to its preseason All-Americans list.
Wide receiver Wesley Idlette, defensive tackle Blake Barnes and free safety Bud Christy have all been named to the prestigious roster. Maryville alums Kyle Chewning and Corey Brewer played in the classic game the past two seasons. Idlette and Barnes were recognized with first team honors. Christy, who is returning for his fifth season after an injury plagued campaign, is an honorable mention selection.
Idlette holds Maryville career records for yards and receptions and is two touchdowns away from the all-time mark there as well.
“It is a great honor to be selected not only for myself but for the team as well,” Idlette said. “The coaches and players have pushed me toward my full potential and it is great that Division III has taken notice.”
Barnes has been a vital part of the rushing defense throughout his four years at Maryville and has twice been named All-USA South.
“Blake is a two time all-conference performer and he’s always been a strong inside presence against the run,” Maryville coach Tony Ierulli said. “His athleticism and strength allows him to get off his block and make plays.
Along with being a big hitter in the secondary, Christy is only two interceptions away from becoming the all-time Maryville leader.
“Bud has great range as a safety,” Ierulli said. “It is something that we recognized when he was a freshman and he has done a great job of contributing every year and being a leader in our secondary.”
They open the 2011 season hosting Huntingdon College on Sept. 3 at Honaker Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
