Friday Night Preview: Kingston at Alcoa

When: Friday

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Alcoa (6-0, 2-0 District 4AA), Kingston (4-1, 2-0)

Previous meeting: Gary Rankin won his 300th game as a coach as the Tornadoes took just two plays to record their first score in a 49-7 blowout last season. Fullback Taharin Tyson scored that first touchdown on a 44-yard run, and Alcoa just kept it coming. The Tornadoes held the Yellow Jackets to 93 yards of offense. Alcoa finished with 348 yards rushing and five scores on the ground.

Last week: The top-ranked Tornadoes set off alarm bells throughout Class 3A with a 35-0 shutout of then eighth-ranked Howard last Friday at Goddard Field. Darrell Warren and Vanderbilt Hambrick both ran for a pair of scores, with Tyson adding the fifth. Alcoa limited the Tigers to 133 yards rushing. Perhaps more telling was Howard held to 1-for-8 passing for 7 yards. Kingston absorbed their first loss of the season with a 28-20 defeat at Lenoir City last week. Lenoir City put 239 yards rushing in the Yellow Jackets. Darren Mossing had touchdown passes of 22 and 53 yards to Robbie Szozba for Kingston.

Keep an eye on: If the Yellow Jackets can yield nearly 250 yards rushing to Lenoir City, you have to wonder how Kingston will fare against a team with a running game of Alcoa’s prowess. While his contributions at one of the receivers have been productive when called upon, senior Steven Isom is proving no slouch as the Tornado punter this season. He just doesn’t get to do it all that often. You won’t have to wait long to see how this one is going to go. Look for Tyson to deliver a big night if the Tornadoes roll.
