A Gas leak forced an evacuation of two buildings in Downtown Maryville this afternoon.
Maryville Fire Department cleared more than 22 people from the Law’s Building and from BB&T after a gas line was hit at 1:54 p.m. on Sevierville Road near Washington Street, Maryville Fire Department administrator Capt. Mike Caylor said.
“Tenncom was cutting in the concrete where the sidewalk is, and we evacuated 22 people from the Law’s Building and people from the BB&T as a precaution,” Caylor said. “We called Public Works in to check the storm drains. We don’t want vapors in those. The gas company is attempted to locate the best place to kill the line. They indicate there may be the possibility it pulled loose from the main line, but they’re not sure.”
At shortly before 3 p.m., Maryville Fire Department personnel told Law Building tenants that the large amount of electrical wiring was hindering progress and, “it may be a while.”
