Knoxville woman dies in Alcoa Highway wreck

Alcoa police officers said Mary Ellen Ferrie, 46, Knoxville, was killed on Saturday, Oct. 16 as the result of a traffic accident on Alcoa Highway.

The traffic accident occurred at 3:04 p.m. Saturday on Alcoa Highway at Northpark Boulevard. Michael Christopher Bunnell, 41, Knoxville, was traveling northbound in the left lane on the highway, and began merging his 2004 Ford Freestar van into the right northbound lane.

Bunnell’s van sideswiped a 2006 Kia Sorento driven by Griselda C. Wilson, 58, Timber Creek Drive, Maryville, causing her vehicle to begin traveling off the highway. Wilson’s vehicle then crashed into a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse, which was being driven by Ferrie and was stopped at the stop sign on Northpark Boulevard at Alcoa Highway.

Ferrie was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Wilson was injured and taken by Rural/Metro Ambulance Service to Blount Memorial Hospital for treatment. Bunnell and a passenger in his vehicle were not injured in the crash.

Brunnell and his passenger were wearing seat belts. Wilson and Ferrie were not wearing seat belts. The investigation into the traffic accident is continuing.
