Combined chorus concert showcases talents across communities

The Maryville High School orchestra and chorus gave new meaning to “the more the merrier.”

Singers from Heritage, William Blount and Lenoir City High schools as well as instrumentalists from the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra performed with MHS at the Clayton Center for the Arts Sept. 23.

While preparing for the concert, MHS teacher Ken Hawkins told Blount Today he wanted to pull students out of their typical competitive mode and unify the schools through music.

Not only was combining choirs and orchestras ambitious, but so was Hawkin’s musical selections, which included Gounod St. Cecilia Mass, which is a 45-minute piece in Latin.

The MHS choir and orchestra’s next event is their Christmas Concert slated for Dec. 13 at the Clayton Center for the Arts.
