Two people have petitioned the Blount County Commission to fill the unexpired term of commissioner Shawn Carter Sr., the U.S. Postal worker who resigned 90 minutes after taking the oath of office, citing Hatch Act concerns.

“Please consider me for the vacant seat that was created by the resignation of Mr. Shawn Carter. I live in District 1. I served on the commission briefly in 2003 and 2004 after the death of my brother, Richard. I am well qualified, capable and able and willing to represent the constituents in this district,” the letter said.

“I write to express my desire to fill the vacancy of the County Commission District 1-B seat. If nominated and approved, I will accept the appointment. As I reside in Commission District 1-B, I satisfy the residency requirement for holding the seat,” he said.
