Alcoa High School junior Grant Daugherty made up a three-stroke, first-round deficit to win the Class A/AA state golf tournament on Wednesday at WillowBrook Golf Club Manchester. Daugherty, who won with an even-par 144 over the two days of the tournament, railed to overtake first-round leader Kory Webb of Christian Academy of Knoxville to become Alcoa’s first state golf champion since Ryo Fukami in 1995. It’s the third state crown for the Tornadoes overall, with Virgil Prater winning in 1957. Daugherty finished four strokes better than runner up Lee Whitehead of Christian Academy.
Lady Tornado senior Lindy McGuire, second a year ago, finished in a tie for fifth in the girls field, 19 shots back of winner Sophia Schubert of Christian Academy, who claimed the title in her freshman campaign.
