Meandering through Maryville

Shoppers get jump on holidays with retail open houses

The chill in the air put many shoppers in their cars instead of on foot as Meander Through Maryville kicked off the downtown holiday shopping season last weekend.

Still, shops saw good crowds as folks took advantage of the holiday atmosphere and specials at selected downtown stores.

Participating in Meander Through Maryville, which was organized by the Maryville Downtown Association, were Dandy Lions, The Village Tinker, Boyd Thomas Clothing, Razzberries, Lollipops, The Knitting Nest and LaRue’s.

The shops treated guests to new merchandise, treats and holiday decorations, as well as creative and innovative gift ideas to fill out Christmas “to do” lists.

National studies have shown that many shoppers are more attuned to shopping local since the recession hit, opting to spend what they are spending at home, a trend local businesses hope will continue. One study (Entreprenuer.com) showed that for every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, $68 comes back to the community.

Freelance photographer Leslie Karnowski captured some of the shoppers enjoying Meander Through Maryville for Blount Today.
