What: Class 6A second round
Kickoff: 7 p.m.
Records: Maryville (10-1), Farragut (7-4)
Previous meeting: It was 10-10 at the half during a regular-season meeting at Shields Stadium in Week 8 before Maryville assumed control en route to a 24-17 win. Senior Preston Burnett returned an Admiral punt 66 yards for a touchdown on the opening series of the third quarter for what would prove the decisive score. Burnett also collected a Patton Robinette pass for 45 yards and a touchdown. The Admirals lost dynamic junior quarterback Cody Rule to a season-ending knee injury during the contest. Farragut closed to within the final margin with two minutes left, the Rebels recovering the onsides kick.
Last week: The No. 1-ranked Rebels amassed 312 yards of offense and spent most of the night within a point of the mercy rule in a 34-7 dismissal of Science Hill in a Class 6A opener at Shields Stadium. Robinette was 6-of-7 for 68 yards and two touchdowns passing, adding a 51-yard sprint to the end zone for another. Burnett and fellow senior Stian Romberg had touchdown catches. Junior running back Jacob West ran 34 yards for a score, senior Robby Pederson adding a 9-yard touchdown jaunt. It was 34-0 Maryville at the half.
Farragut stunned Sevier County, 41-21, on the road. Admiral running back Jordan Freeman pounded the Bears for 230 yards rushing and three scores on 27 carries. Farragut led, 17-0, at the half. Sophomore Jonathan King, who’s taken over for Rule at quarterback, had a screen pass to Taino Perez go 67 yards for a touchdown. King, the Admiral placekicker, also had field goals of 52 and 41 yards. The Rebels have a pretty good kicker too in Mr. Football finalist Zach Sharp.
Keep an eye on: Rebel freshman running back Shawn didn’t play last week due to injury and West left the contest with one. It didn’t prove much of a concern against the Hilltoppers, but the Admirals are sure to present a sterner test. Maryville essentially put it away with a lengthy third-quarter drive encompassing 12 running plays in the previous meeting. If both Prevo and West are unable to go Friday or are limited, Pederson is really coming on strong. While he’s done the greater damage with his legs in his first season as the starter, Robinette has one of the finest passing arms to come through Blount County in some time.
