Many Blount County business leaders, friends and community volunteers gathered at the home of Randy and Angela Massey on April 12 to hear Knoxville Mayor and Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Haslam talk about the issues he is addressing on the campaign trail.
The beautiful spring evening was a perfect setting for the reception on the Massey patio, as supporters listened to Haslam and his brother, Pilot Travel Centers’ CEO Jimmy Haslam, break down the issues and the progress of Bill Haslam’s quest for the Republican nomination for governor of Tennessee.
Haslam shared with supporters thoughts on his platform and the reception he is getting as he travels across the state. Highlighting his dual role as a successful executive in both business, as president of Pilot Travel Centers, and in government, as mayor of Knoxville, Haslam said he is well-prepared to make the tough decisions that will need to be made by the state’s next governor.
“As mayor, I submitted six balanced budgets, almost tripled the money in the city’s Rainy Day Fund and decreased the city’s debt,” said Bill Haslam. “And we did it while bringing property taxes to their lowest level in 50 years.”
Haslam said that his conversations with the people he is meeting on the campaign trail points up vividly that jobs are a major concern in the state.
Haslam also thanked supporters for their donations in this long campaign, saying that the contributions have allowed the campaign to be aggressive about getting their message out to the public.
Also running for the Republican nomination for governor are Zach Wamp and Ron Ramsey.
