Blount County commissioner Joe McCulley had planned to retire but instead he is campaigning again, this time for the District 8 seat in the State House.
“I have been encouraged by numerous friends and constituents to be a candidate for the Eighth District State House of Representatives being vacated by Rep. Joe McCord,” said McCulley. “Since I am a resident of the Eighth District and currently represent part of the district on county commission, I have decided to run for this position, subject to the Republican Primary election of August 5, 2010.”
McCulley said serving as a county commissioner has been a good experience for being a state representative. “Since the counties only have the power that the state grants them, it is very important that the representatives in Nashville understand the implications state legislation can have on the counties,” he said.
The commissioner said it was his and his wife’s intention to retire and build on a lot they own in another county. “But after further consideration, we have decided to remodel our current house and stay in Blount County where we have lived for the past 37 years,” he said. “Blount County is our home, and we have our family and friends here who would be difficult to leave.”
