Learn to scuba dive at Pellissippi State

Imagine scuba diving around coral reefs, in underwater caves and through sunken ships.

If you’re intrigued, then you need to sign up for Introduction to Scuba Diving, offered through Pellissippi State Community College’s Business and Community Services. You’ll get firsthand experience diving and have the opportunity to continue on to become an expert scuba diver.

Jimmie Wheeler and Rusty Hallman, co-owners of Ski/Scuba Center on Sutherland Avenue, have seen everything from sunken ships to hammerhead sharks to tiny seahorses. Wheeler has many years of teaching scuba diving, and both men have made numerous dives. The two are co-teaching the course.

The class takes place at Ski/Scuba Center, where a pool is available. For anyone who is a little hesitant, the center offers a $25 session to “get your feet wet,” so to speak.

“If you like it, you can apply the $25 toward the cost of the class,” Wheeler said.

There’s nothing like scuba diving, he says.

“I’ve seen the James Bond ship in the Bahamas. It was used in the movie where he’s chased through the wreck by a shark,” Wheeler said.

The cost of the class is $212. Students will be provided with the necessary equipment to use during pool sessions.

Three different Saturday-Sunday sessions, all of them 9 a.m.-6 p.m., are scheduled: April 10-11 and May 15-16. Students have a break for lunch both days.

Upon completion of the class, students may choose to go on to the next step: earning their SSI (Scuba Schools International) certification by making five open-water dives. Wheeler and Hallman will discuss the costs and details with interested students.
