Keep Blount Beautiful partners with Terracycle

Blount County residents can now recycle items that are normally thought of un-recyclable. Keep Blount Beautiful is partnering with Terracycle to recycling corks, gum packaging, nutrition bar wrappers and cell phones.

According to a Keep Blount Beautiful press release, TerraCycle makes affordable, eco-friendly products from a wide range of different non-recyclable waste materials. With more than 50 products available at major retailers like Wal-Mart, Target, The Home Depot, OfficeMax, Petco and Whole Foods Market, TerraCycle is one of the fastest growing eco-friendly manufacturers in the world.

Their hope is to eliminate the idea of waste by finding innovative, unique uses for materials others deem garbage. Free collection programs pay schools and non-profits nationwide to collect used packaging such as drink pouches, energy bar wrappers, yogurt cups, cookie wrappers, chip bags, corks and more. The collected materials are upcycled into affordable, high quality products ranging from tote bags and purses to shower curtains and kites.

Keep Blount Beautiful has signed up to collect: wine corks - natural or synthetic, any energy, granola, nutrition, cereal and protein bar wrappers with an inner foil lining , Trident, Bubblicious, Dentyne Ice and Stride Gum Packaging. “Will accept anything from individual wrappers gum is wrapped in to the packaging it came in to the foil bubble packs. We will not accept any items where gum is present,” Keep Blount Beautiful director Charlene Deshay said.

They also will accept cell phones, cell phone batteries and accessories. Donors are asked to make sure to delete all personal information.
