Scots lead nation in assists

The Maryville College men’s basketball team has displayed a real affinity for sharing the wealth this season.

The Scots enter Saturday’s Great South Athletic Conference game with Huntingdon College at Boydson Baird Gymnasium leading the nation in assists per game with 19.9 per contest. Maryville coach Randy Lambert’s squad is ranked in the top 25 in 10 statistical all told.

Maryville’s 81.7 points per game ranks 23rd while its free-throw consistency (76.9 percent) ranks 14th in the NCAA Division III. The orange and garnet have done an excellent job of taking care of the ball with a 4.9 turnover margin, ranked 21st. Their assist to turnover ratio of 1.4 is fourth nationally, while the Scots’ 11.4 steals per game ranks 15th.

Individually, senior Jared Laverdiere is ranked seventh nationally with a 3.55 assist to turnover ratio. Sophomore Wes Lambert (3.0) and Jordan Damron (2.68) are ranked 15th and 22nd, respectively. Senior Greg Hernandez is ranked 39th in points per game with 20.5 per contest and 37th (59.3) in field goal percentage.

Maryville’s women’s team opens Saturday’s doubleheader at 2 p.m., with the men following at 4.
