Maryville ranks in top 50 in national Directors’ Cup race

The Maryville College athletics department accumulated 100 points for its Great South Athletic Conference titles and advancement to the NCAA tournament second round in volleyball and women’s soccer during 2009 fall athletic competition. The strong showing has the Scots currently ranked 43rd in the Division III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup.

The Learfield Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 18 sports — nine women’s and nine men’s.

Williams (Mass.) is presently leading the Division III standings with 367 points. Maryville is the only Great South institution in the present rankings. The first Division III winter standings will be released March 8. Complete standings and the scoring structure can be found on NACDA’s Web site at www.nacda.com.
