Weight management center renewed as Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence

The Blount Memorial Weight Management Center has been renewed as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC).

The Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence program was founded on the need to recognize the centers that perform well and to help surgeons and hospitals reach optimal levels of performance. To qualify for designation as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, hospitals and surgeons must participate in a rigorous evaluation process designed to document that they have a comprehensive program and meet the established program requirements for providing safe bariatric surgical care with excellent short- and long-term outcomes. The evaluation not only documents process, but also emphasizes results.

Blount Memorial Hospital, surgeons Dr. Mark Colquitt and Dr. Jonathan Ray, and Premier Surgical Associates are collectively deemed recertified through 2012. The Blount Memorial Weight Management Center recently has celebrated 1,000 surgeries and more than 75,000 pounds lost since the program was launched in 2002. The success also has resolved many patients' medical conditions related to morbid obesity such as diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea.
