Alcoa City, Blount County and Maryville City schools are closing early today due to snowy weather.
Snow began falling early this morning and as it has continued, many roads became covered. Jane Morton, public information officer with Blount County Schools, said classes will be dismissed incrementally. “We’re dismissing elementary schools at 10:30 a.m., middle schools at 11:15 a.m. and high schools at noon,” she said.
After-school care at the elementary schools will remain open for two hours after classes are dismissed, but staff will be contacting parents to arrange to pick up their children, Morton said.
Alcoa City Schools director Tom Shamblin said schools began dismissing at 10 a.m. “We are dismissing early today. We began at 10 a.m., so our kids hopefully are out of here,” he said, adding that after-school care in the system also is closing.
Sharon Anglim, public information officer with the Maryville city schools said the system is dismissing all schools three hours early. This means dismissal times will be staggered with elementary schools closing around 11:30 a.m., the intermediate school will dismiss about 11:40 p.m., and the middle school and high school will dismiss about 12:20 p.m. After-school care in the city school system is also canceled.
