Blount County book drive to help Pellissippi State students

Blount County residents spent just under $1,000 last March at the Faculty Senate Book Sale hosted annually by Pellissippi State Community College. The proceeds, $751.50 to be exact, went to the Pellissippi State Foundation to fund student scholarships.

Last year, organizers appreciated the community participation. This year, they hope to surpass that amount and urge the Blount County community to get involved even earlier by donating books and other goods in clean condition. Since most items at the sale range in price from 50 cents to $4.

Previous sales have been successful thanks to the additional strong community support. The public is encouraged to donate to the 2010 sale through Feb. 26. In addition to books, the following items are welcomed: CDs, DVDs, videos, vinyl records, magazines, calendars, puzzles and computer games.

Drop-offs may be made weekdays, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., at the Blount County Center, 1010 Middlesettlements Road, Alcoa, in the front office. The Faculty Senate Book Sale dates in Blount and Knox counties are March 1-3 at the Blount County Center; March 1-5, Magnolia Avenue Campus; March 3-4, Division Street Campus and March 17-18, Pellissippi Campus.

Pellissippi State, which has been offering classes in Blount County since 1985, is on schedule for completion this year of the new Blount County campus. The facility will accommodate up to 1,000 students and offer a full range of educational options, including a new nursing program.
