John Daly makes ‘Grip it and Rip it’ impression at Lambert Acres

John Daly made his presence known at Lambert Acres Golf Course Tuesday when the former British Open and former PGA Open champ filmed a commercial for the facility.

Course co-owner Nick Berrong was impressed with the popular PGA pro, who is in the area to participate in the News-Sentinel Open and Nationwide Tour, Aug. 26-29.

Daly was to hit off a tee and then turn to the camera ProMedia owner Steve Samples was manning and say his lines.

“We asked if he wanted to warm up and he said, ‘No problem.’ He teed it up and killed it. He had to have carried that ball over 300 yards. A normal golfer is lucky to hit it 250 yards and that is with a roll. He flies it over 300 yards,” Nick Berrong said.

Berrong said Daly’s caddie, David Rawls, has been a friend of Berrong’s family for years. “He graduated Maryville High School, and Jim and I have known him 30 years. We talked to him, and he brought John over to do a commercial so we could show the improvements on the golf course and the new driving range,” Berrong said. “We wanted to let everyone in the area know we’ve improved a lot and will continue to improve.”

The course co-owner said it was evident Daly does a lot of commercial work because it didn’t take him long to recite his lines correctly. “He did it in two takes. The commercial didn’t take over three or four minutes to film,” Berrong said.

The golf course co-owner said he enjoyed meeting Daly. “It was nice meeting someone of that caliber of a golfer and watching him hit the ball,” he said. “He’s a great person and has a great personality. He was joking and carrying on; he was just like one of us.”
