Afeni Henderson, a 2010 Pellissippi State Community College graduate, has received a $22,000 academic scholarship to attend Tennessee Wesleyan College.
Henderson graduated magna cum laude with an Associate of Science degree from Pellissippi State. She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for community colleges.
Henderson begins work on a bachelor’s degree in nursing this month at the Tennessee Wesleyan campus in West Knoxville. She expects to do her clinical training at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center.
The 38-year-old single mother of two was a part-time student for four years at Pellissippi State, where she completed all of her nursing prerequisites.
“I always wanted to be in the medical field,” she said. “I’ll go for a master’s after I graduate in two years. I plan to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist or a nurse practitioner.”
