A delegation of 11 athletes and 7 coaches recently attended Tennessee Special Olympics State Games in Nashville on May 15-16. Area 15 (Blount County) Special Olympians returned from Nashville on Sunday afternoon after a full day of competition on Saturday.
The schools represented were Union Grove Middle, coached by Debbie Ballard and Donna Holden; William Blount High, coached by Donna Miles; and Heritage High and Carpenter’s Middle, coached by Stephanie Schrock and Helen Staley. Representing independent adult athletes was Tiger McCord. Power-lifting coach Chip Hulquist was also in attendance. Athletes from Blount County brought home a total of 6 gold medals, 6 silver medals, 8 bronze medals and 3 fourth-place ribbons.

Robby Ellis: silver medal, standing long jump; silver medal, 50-meter dash
Eugene Morton: bronze medal, softball throw; silver medal, 50-meter dash
Zach McMurray: bronze medal, 400-meter walk; bronze medal, 50-meter dash
Jacob Stinnett: bronze medal, softball throw; silver medal, standing long jump
Chris Denson: gold medal, standing long jump; bronze medal, 50-meter dash
Brody Theien: bronze medal, softball throw; fourth place, standing long jump
Brittany Campbell: bronze medal, softball throw; bronze medal, standing long jump
Tyler Burruss: fourth place, 50-meter dash; silver medal, standing long jump
E. J. Snyder: fourth place, 100-meter dash; gold medal, standing long jump
Karyl Kant: gold medal, deadlift; gold medal, bench press; gold medal, combined
