The Hope for Today Bean Supper at First Baptist Church of Maryville raised more then $9,300 to support cancer survivors in their fight against the disease.
The event was held Sept. 19 and, despite inclement weather, turnout was good, Hope for Today Cancer Support Group founder/executive director Charlene Walker said.
“It went great. We had a lot of good comments. It was the best ever, and we have collected more than $9,300 at this point.”
Walker said there also were 58 cancer survivors honored at the event. Tommy Spencer served as master of ceremonies and Tim Parton sang. Essence of Praise, a praise and worship group from Blount County, also performed.
“People said it was a great, well-planned fundraiser. They all had a lot of fun,” she said. “We had door prizes, and the beans were absolutely delicious.”
Walker thanked Peggy Coffey, Mary Farmer, Keith McBrayer, Darlene Coffey and Vicky McMurray for cooking the beans.
“They were there at 7 Saturday morning, cooking beans. They cooked them all day. We had so many people from the community saying they were delicious. We fed about 700, and had about 150 take-out dinners. It was terrific,” Walker said. “It was just an awesome night.”
Rain fell for much of the day on Sept. 19 but Walker said that by late afternoon the skies started to clear, and people started to show for the bean supper that evening. “We couldn’t believe the crowd we had. We just praise God and give Him all the praise for this,” she said. “This will help a lot of cancer patients in Blount County -- 100 percent of this money stays in Blount County.”
Walker said the group is planning a spring fundraiser as well. Walker thanked everyone who helped make the event a success. “We had so many volunteers and workers who worked tirelessly the whole time,” she said. “We had wonderful volunteers. We thank the Maryville Fire Department. They came and helped set up chairs and tables and helped put them up and even mopped the floor.”
