Combat City Classic set for this weekend

The inaugural Combat City Classic is scheduled for this weekend at the Alcoa High School baseball field and Everett Park. The tournament for Class E and D teams from East, Middle and West Tennessee, along with teams from North and South Carolina, is sponsored by Combat Sports, TAI Sports and the City of Alcoa.

Admission at the high school, the tournament’s show field, is $5 for an all-day pass. Admission at Everett is free. All proceeds go to benefit the Alcoa High School baseball booster club.

Festivities begin Friday night at 7 at the high school with a home run derby, with Dan Smith/Combat Sports slugger Rusty Bumgardner the guest of honor. Games will begin Saturday morning at 9 at the high school and Everett Park. Play resumes Sunday at 9 a.m., with the championship game tentatively scheduled at the high school for at 6 p.m.

A native of Gastonia, N.C., Bumgardner is a member of the national softball hall of fame and holder of several USSSA records, along with the mark most home runs at the Smoky Mountain Class. The Combat City Classic is a corporate sponsored non-USSSA sanctioned event.

Blount County Sports Hall Of Fame Induction Banquet

Tickets are now available for the 2009 Blount County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet scheduled for Monday, Oct. 26, at the Airport Hilton at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $25 per person, which includes dinner.

The 2009 inductees are Archie Anderson, Ken Chambers, Annie Baird-Frick, Dennis Godfrey, Jimmy Harris, Earl McMahan, Johnny Morgan, Bill Padgett, Larry Satterfield, Ron Waters and Special Olympic Athlete of the Year Earl Anderson

The 1941 Everett High School football team, the 1942-43 Friendsville High School basketball team, and the 1946 Maryville High School Football Team will also be recognized. Tickets, which must be purchased in advance, are available at the Maryville-Alcoa-Blount County Parks and Recreation office located at 316 S. Everett High Road in Maryville. Maryville Biddy League tryouts Thursday

Tryouts for Maryville Biddy League boys basketball for third- and fourth-grade teams and fifth-, sixth- and seventh-grade teams are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 22, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the high school’s James Campbell Gymnasium.

Registration will start at 7 p.m. prior to the tryout. The $75 registration fee must be paid prior to the tryout. This is a tryout/draft league and all participants will not make a team.

Those who have not attended a previous tryout must attend the Thursday session to be eligible for the draft. Any returning players that are already on a team must register and pay their fee during registration but do not need to try out.
