‘Thank you very much’

‘Celebrities’ teach Fort Craig students value of encouragement

A visit from Alec Trebek, Hannah Montana and Elvis brought down the house at Fort Craig Elementary School. On a recent morning during their weekly Family Gathering, the kids and parents were treated to a visit by these three celebrities. Alec Trebek, aka teacher Jerry Cruze, brought his game show “Jeopardy” to the school to help teach the children the life skill of “No Put Downs.”

Contestants on the show were the popular Hannah Montana, aka intern Kristin House, and Elvis, aka third grade teacher Andy Howe. They were asked several questions, and didn’t always get the right answers. The students were encouraged not to offer criticism and put-downs to the celebrities, but to encourage and praise them for doing their personal best. Both contestants did a great job, and the kids enjoyed the show.

Friday Family Gathering is enjoyed by both kids and parents. Every Friday morning, kids, teachers and parents gather in the school gym to participate in movements, skits and presentations. Kids look forward to this every week and their favorite visitor is Elvis, who makes several appearances each year. Family Gathering ends with all kids and teachers, and some parents, exiting the gym while dancing to the “Love Train.”
