Fighting the fire

‘Shopping for Change’ hopes to help repair Haven House

When a June kitchen fire hit Haven House, a nonprofit dedicated to providing support for victims and survivors of domestic violence, the damage hit deeper than the kitchen. Haven House operates on a shoe-string budget, depending on charitable donations and grants, so the financial loss hurt to the point that many women and children had to be turned away.

Blount County can continue to help Haven House by doing their Christmas shopping early.

“Shopping for Change” is a day for checking off both your personal wish list and your Christmas list, say organizers. Planned for Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the gym at First Baptist Church of Maryville, Shopping for Change will feature 25 to 30 area vendors selling their goods with a portion going to benefit Haven House (and a small portion donated to First Baptist of Maryville’s Mother of Preschoolers group).

Haven House will be one of the vendors, selling their Café Femenino coffee, which benefits not only Haven House but other women who are trapped in abuse and poverty.

Shopping for Change will feature children’s activities, bake sale items and Santa -- who will stay to have his picture taken with children at his own booth.

The website -- www.shopping4change.org -- will update the vendor list and offer information for anyone wishing to be a vendor. Here is a list of vendors who have signed up to participate:
